Trump pledges 25% tariffs on Canada and Mexico, deeper tariffs on China

Source: Yahoo! Finance/Reuters

Mon, November 25, 2024 at 6:50 p.m. EST

(Reuters) -U.S. President-elect Donald Trump said on Monday that on his first day in office he would impose a 25% tariff on all products from Mexico and Canada, and an additional 10% tariff on goods from China, citing concerns over illegal immigration and the trade of illicit drugs.

"On January 20th, as one of my many first Executive Orders, I will sign all necessary documents to charge Mexico and Canada a 25% Tariff on ALL products coming into the United States, and its ridiculous Open Borders," Trump said in a post on Truth Social.

Trump said the tariffs would remain in place until the two countries clamp down on drugs, particularly fentanyl, and migrants crossing the border illegally.

On China, the president-elect accused Beijing of not taking strong enough action to stop the flow illicit drugs crossing the border into the U.S. from Mexico. "Until such time as they stop, we will be charging China an additional 10% Tariff, above any additional Tariffs, on all of their many products coming into the United States of America," Trump said.

To stay in place until “the two countries clamp down on drugs, particularly fentanyl, and migrants crossing the border illegally.”

Huh? What the fuck is he talking about? Illegal immigrants crossing from Canada are not really a problem…at least last time I checked. Most illegal immigrants don’t come from illegal border crossings, either. The majority are people who are here legally, and overstayed their visas. Also, most fentanyl doesn’t come out of Mexico. It comes in from China, via our sea ports. Most drugs aren’t brought in by Hispanics trying to cross the border. US citizens bring most of it across.

So tell me again, why Canada and Mexico are being targeted here?

What a goddamned, dumbass, fucking wanker.

There is actually a healthy propaganda industry built up around the Northern Border. Not a day passes without a story of some mysterious cars waiting for runners at the Canadian border. It is an occasional thing, people with work visas expiring, people wanting to reunite with family, muslim families, actual running from the law. There are many, many border patrol families who want in on the federal disbursement of border dollars and they probably already had a reduction of marijuana funds, so they've got catching up to do (although clowns inexplicably do buy marijuana on the wrong side of the border even still.)

The "ridiculous open border" with Cananda is a fact of life and a major economic driver on each side of the border -- but we're talking about Vermont, New York, Michigan Minnesota, Washington. New Hampshire and Maine. Hmm. I wonder what the motivation is? (yes I know I left out Idaho, Montana and North Dakota. AFAIK there is no real economic synergy with the border there. Is the picture clearing up?)

The black market should thrive. The time to get in is NOW. What do you predict will be the first products to disappear from store shelves (or Amazon, if you prefer)? The Dollar Store will have to become The Five Dollar Store, I suppose. Expect violence when organized crime gets involved.

Philly metro has a HUGE Scott Paper facility (in Chester, PA right on the Delaware River) -

The problem during the pandemic was "business model-" related. I.e., companies like this don't like to pay to keep "extra" in warehouses, so they calculate their manufacturing based on "just in time" delivery, aligning with their monthly/annual sales, and if something messes up those calculations, a shortage can happen quickly.

But I believe it has to do with Mexico importing parts from China with the final assembly taking place in Mexico. When I heard that I don't recall if they were talking about autos or iPhones.

And what about the trade agreement Trump negotiated with Canada and Mexico in his 1st term? Why is that not taking care of the problem? Why the extraordinary measures come January 20, 2025?

They are the only parts of their kind in the world. When he imposed tariffs last time, they showed up on my invoices immediately. I was forced to pass them along to my customers. HE HAS NO POWER TO MAKE CHINA PAY ANYTHING. He can only impose tariffs on goods coming in AT THE BORDER, and IMPORTERS PAY.

The importers, us and American companies pay tariffs, and the money goes to the US Treasury. The American companies must pass their higher costs on to their customers in the form of higher prices. WE are the customers. The tariffs will increase inflation again.

Tue Nov 26, 2024, 02:10 AM

car sub assemblies is going to have a huge impact on car prices. New vehicle pricing is already in the stratosphere let alone what they will be after the sub assemblies are hit. Mexico could impose a blanket tariff on US goods imported to Mexico as retaliation. According to the website "tradingeconomics.com" our 2024 exports to Mexico amounted to over $265 billion dollars for 2022. A 25% retaliatory tariff would have an impact of over $66 billion dollars. Much of what Mexico gets from us could be sourced from and through China which has been aggressively courting a huge increase in their relationship with Mexico.

So the ignorance of these morons is on full display as they claim to want a foreign policy of reigning in China while at the same time the proposed trade tariffs would drive Mexico much deeper into the arms of China. At the same time our domestic industries that export to Mexico would see large declines in business which would benefit producers in other countries around the world not engaged in a tariff war with Mexico. The net effect on China would be to strengthen them through increased commerce and influence in our region and that influence has already been documented as including a military component.

The charts in the link are updated using available information for 2024.

"Mexico Imports from United States was US$265.42 Billion during 2022, according to the United Nations COMTRADE database on international trade."

He can't actually just slap on a tariff by saying it's for jobs. He can say it's for national security and the trump team often characterize both drug smuggling and illegal border crossings as national security issues.

So what's happening is that he's laying the groundwork for the main legal justification for tariffs.

27. Will we have to share rice bowls?
Tue Nov 26, 2024, 09:48 AM
Nov 26

SO the goal is as we've been telling people for years: turn the US into a series of little fiefdoms where the annointed 1% go about in their planes and helis, and the people toil in dirt-floor factories behind barbed wire fences, share a bowl of rice every 24 hours on the 6 hour break, sleep in sheds out back of the reeking smoke-belching factory. When you're choked out or can't meet quota, you're thrown out into the streets full of zombies and rabid dogs.

It's what people like the orange one, the reeking malignant narcissist with massive sadism, has always imagined in his wet dreams.

How does that happen? When they kill of what still remains of the federal government, and there is no regulation, no schools, no road funding, no emergency funding, when Russia comes in to "help" (Gabbard is a Russian asset) , and they have done away with medicare, medicaid, social security, MINIMUM WAGE and CHILD LABOR LAWS,

they very quickly move us to the place where we're wandering without food, without electricity, without anything. Then they "hire" you for a bowl of potatoes or rice . This is truly where we are headed, and no one is even going to try to stop it.
