JUST IN: MSNBC Loses Almost HALF Its Viewers in Stunning Post-Election Ratings Report

Source: MEDIAite

Nov 27th, 2024, 7:49 am

MSNBC is facing a staggering ratings collapse in the wake of the 2024 election, with the network’s audience shrinking by nearly half as Fox News became the only cable news outlet to show post-election growth.

According to Nielsen data, MSNBC’s total viewership has dropped by 47 percent post-election, and its critical 25-54 demographic plummeted to just 63,000 during primetime—a sharp contrast to its pre-election numbers. The losses are particularly stark compared to rival network Fox News, which solidified its dominance as the most-watched cable news network during and after the election.

While MSNBC pulled in 644,000 viewers in primetime, Fox News soared to 3.2 million, an 86 percent year-over-year increase in total viewers. In the coveted 25-54 demographic, Fox saw a 147 percent surge, averaging 476,000 viewers.

In total-day ratings, MSNBC’s struggles continued, drawing 497,000 viewers and only 49,000 in the 25-54 demo, as shows like Morning Joe recorded some of their lowest numbers in years. The network’s flagship morning program saw a 37 percent drop in viewership after co-hosts Joe Scarborough and Mika Brzezinski met with President-elect Donald Trump.

I think it's more people turned off ANY "political" programming. Whether folks drift back to it in the future is up in the air.

It may be the next shopping network; it all depends on who buys it. At some point, something will come along to fill the market need vacated by MSNBC ealier in the year. Maybe it will be a rebranded MSNBC, itself; maybe not.

If Musk buys "XBC," or whatever the name will be, it will be one of a thousand right wing media outlets. It will be run poorly. It will die in the sea of competition.

even if comcast NEVER sells it... they plan to turn it into something else... "Spinco" ( working name for the spin off cable channels ). It will not be associated with NBC and therefore, NBC news and reporters. So when spinco becomes real, it will only be talking heads talking to other talking heads. No NBC reporters, no field operations and camera crews. Probably we have seen the last of Ali velshi reporting on a hurricane or a major protest or school shooting. So sure, they can invite WaPo reporters on to talking head interviews so they reporter can hawk their next book... but that's about it.

Losing the "news' means we MSNBC watchers will have to get our hard news from another source ( NBC, CBS, ABC, Faux for those who like their news with whipped lies on top, and sad little CNN ).

Cable is going away... I just attended a pre-thanksgiving at a friends place... most of the people there were younger... after dinner we told each other a few entertaining stories... and then one by one they all switch to staring at their phones... and that's my queue to make my excuses and leave. The under 40s get their fix from the apps and X and tiktok and their favorite "influencer" than actual news from actual unbiased people that studied journalism ( or at least tried ).

Not to mention that pre-Deadline White House in the afternoon, there isn't a single person on worth watching that isn't trying to sane wash or otherwise make Trump seem like a reasonable person and his whack job stupid ass voters need to be listened to. Complete with accepting the trump premise that immigrants ( legal or not ) are a big problem that needs to be addressed and that inflation is killing us and that crime is out of control. As for Morning Joe... never trusted Joe and Mika should never again be allowed to even say "know your worth" because she clearly thinks of herself as worthless.

I will watch Deadline White House, Chris Hayes, Rachael when she is on, Lawrence, and Velshi and Stephanie Rhule. They are all headed to podcast hell anyway... just like Keith Olbermann... say goodbye to those $20M a year contracts Rachael.

Too many people today expect the real media like MSNBC to play favorites. Sorry, but they don't. Do they report things we don't like to hear? Yes, but that's to be expected when you report facts. Journalism doesn't play favorites like Murdoch does.

Hopefully, MSNBC will continue to do what they always have. I understand that their viewship has dropped. I haven't turned it on since the election, but not because I hate MSNBC. It's election depression. The same thing happened to me in 2016.

People shouldn't give up on MSNBC. That's the list thing we need. Real journalism needs to be supported, not shunned.

The popular vote is irrelevant only the electoral votes count. Andrea Mitchell saying Biden was too old and slipping in republican talking points. I’ve given you instances of them being less than honest. I hope we get real honest reporting and investigative journalism and not talking heads . I don’t care what happens to MSNBC, the majority of people who are liberal don’t care only a few

I listened in a few nights between the debate and the election. I heard a lot of bemoaning of inflation, and a bit about saving democracy and abortion rights. It was a presentation that seemed designed to look sympathetic to Democrats, but In actuality was the same drumbeat of doom that every RW station was blaring.

Most - esp the young - get all their news online now. You don’t have to sit in front of a tv - you can listen while working, driving , cleaning etc and get in-depth podcasts - instead of 5 minutes on a topic, you can get 2 hrs on a topic you are interested in.

If there aren’t journalists, we might as well play checkers

I for one blame much of the media for refusing to ficus on what trump’s policies would mean for government and the lives average people. Few of them bothered to explain what was in Project 2025. Even fewer spent any time reporting the accomplishments of the Biden Administration or to refute Trump’s lies that inflation and mortgage rates were the highest on record.

So what has MSNBC or any major media done to earn our viewership?

Television can go to hell.

I quit watching television news and opinion in the disgusting run-up to the Iraq war.

In 2012 my wife and I quit advertising supported television entirely -- no broadcast, no cable, no satellite. We simply don't see television advertising in our daily lives.

Before Twitter came along I thought television was the worst medium for news and opinion. Both Television and Twitter bypass our critical thinking skills with a flood of bullshit.

Reading news, written in long paragraphs, allows one to stop and think critically.

After Jan 6th, they went all in on the fearmongering (Democracy) model that FoxNews uses. Nicolle Wallace literally did the same show daily for the last 4 years. All the other prime time shows did the same for the most part. Only O'Donnell stayed mostly out of that trap. Had they focused on what Biden was actually doing and had accomplished, Dems would've been better able to counter the FoxNews lies and propaganda with facts and unbiased data. If they'd have had more guests like the oil trader Hayes had on who explained how Biden had basically broken OPEC and stabilized the oil markets, MSNBC would've been much more interesting to watch,

On top of that, MSNBC kept telling viewers what they thought viewers wanted to hear. Dems, imo, are capable of critical thinking. Less preaching to the choir and more real, informed discussion of the issues was needed.

I haven't watched any MSNBC since the election because I know it will just be 4 more years of Trump-centric programming even though it will be criticizing Trump. I'm just not interested in watching that.

149. Agreed. It got to the point where Rachel Maddow actually said to the widow of Alexei Navalny that if America votes

for Trump that it would be JUST LIKE choosing Putin - and needless to say, Rachel didn't quite get the reaction from Mrs. Navalny that she was expecting. Mrs. Navalny was understandably appalled at having to listen to a woman who's become a multimillionaire trashing Trump on national television trivializing what her husband had died for - explaining to Rachel (and her audience) that the United States has an independent judicial system and all sorts of other safeguards that don't exist in Russia, etc.

Certain people bask in the warm glow of other idiots parroting their own, failed talking points. A Confederacy of Dumbfucks is just as dumb. Electing country managers based on their photogenic appeal on cable TV, results in the country of Dumbfuckistan.

Elect competent managers, stop giving free air time to the circus. 🤡 rides on the wave of free propaganda by MSNBC and everyone. Clowniie McClownface received billions in free advertising masquerading as “news”.

You’ve been played billionaire media giants—ETTD.

is the only news I trust. I'm not ready to see any political coverage , so I tune in to MSNBC on a TV in a room that I'm not in. I don't have to hear or see his stupid smirking face and help support MSNBC ratings at the same time. I feel like we just cant risk loosing the only block of shows that speak truth to power and cut through all of the gaslighting and sane washing that's happening right now.

we couldn't bear the thought of hearing his whiny, fake tough-guy voice (ack!) or see his ugly, evil, smirking face (ew!).

NO. THEY DID NOT LIE TO US. They fucking tried to tell us he is a fascist! Too few listened. Or believed. They were hopeful, right along with us, and just as devastated at what happened. I saw it in their faces. I heard in their voices.

I did not watch Morning Joe. He annoyed the hell out of me. But I watched these people, and each issued clear warnings about the election: Rachel, Lawrence, Joy, Nicole, Stephanie, Jen, Ali, and Chris. THEY are the true heart of MSNBC, and if we lose them, they will be sorely missed. We NEED their voices, maybe now more than ever.

I think we will start turning it on again, but keeping it muted. Any of us who don't want to lose them should probably do the same.

maybe it is time for people to look elsewhere in the world for their news and opinions?

Internet streaming is a thing, no need for free to air or cable TV.

BBC UK does well, so does Aljazeera, PBS can be fair at times too.

But it's a good thing, when people wake up to the fact local US media is colored by the financiers behind it and the talking heads you see simply echo what they are told to say - sincerely, with a straight face.
And viewers know that and find it not desirable.

Is there a special school for TV anchors where they are taught to practice their serious faces while they say phrases like 'Snow tastes like Poo!', possibly?

After the election, I just couldn't stomach all the finger pointing and criticism. I just had to process everything and try to get past my anger.

They need to get rid of Andrea Mitchell, Katy Tur, Chris Jansing, and change some of the format. Cover more news.
