FDA leader during Trump's first term sounds alarm on RFK Jr's potential plans: 'It will cost lives'

Source: The Independent

Friday 29 November 2024 22:14 GMT

A former Trump administration Food and Drug Administration commissioner is worried that the incoming administration’s pick of Robert F. Kennedy Jr. to lead a key health agency will prove dangerous.

“I think if RFK follows through on his intentions, and I believe he will, and I believe he can, it will cost lives in this country,” Scott Gottlieb said during a Friday appearance on CNBC’s Squawk Box.

“You’re going to see measles, mumps and rubella vaccination rates go down, and like I said, if we lose another 5 percent [of vaccinations], which could happen in the next year or two, we will see large measles outbreaks,” he added.

Gottlieb, who serves on the board of Pfizer, maker of one of the Covid vaccines, is one of a number of health experts who have raised the alarm about the Trump administration’s pick of Kennedy to lead the department of Health and Human Services. The Independent has contacted the Trump-Vance transition team for comment.

Easily overlooked.

A kid will cut him/herself, say a finger. It's washed (maybe). But there are germs that haven't been addressed because the kid's parent(s) didn't have the kid get a tetanus shot.

Lockjaw. Lockjaw, also known as tetanus, is a bacterial disease that causes painful muscle contractions and tightening, especially in the jaw and neck. The disease is caused by the bacterium Clostridium tetani, which produces a toxin that attacks the nervous system.

What are the signs and symptoms of tetanus?
Early signs of a tetanus infection include headache and muscle spasms in your jaw. Tetanus is often called lockjaw because one of the early symptoms of the condition includes jaw cramping. Your jaw muscles may tighten. This makes it difficult to open your mouth.

Other symptoms may include:
Difficulty swallowing or breathing.
Drooling.
Neck muscle stiffness.
Muscle spasms in your stomach, back, arms and legs.
Seizures.
Fever and sweating.
High blood pressure.
Fast heart rate (tachycardia).
Uncontrolled peeing (urination) and pooping (defecation).

What does tetanus look like?
If you have a tetanus infection, your muscles spasm or tighten. Your facial muscles may lock into a rigid smile. Your back may arch uncontrollably.

"DTP" = Diphtheria, Tetanus, and Pertussis.

And it's especially needed when you have pertussis ( "whooping cough" ) undergoing an outbreak right now - Worst U.S. whooping cough outbreak in a decade has infected thousands

Is that once you have had one, your risk of ever getting it severely decreases. So adult anti-vaxers probably won't suffer tetanus because their parents got them vaccinated. But old age will decrease that.

Their children will suffer a lot more.

What I am noticing already is how many parents are refusing the first of the Hepatitis B series for their babies before discharge and the new RSV preventative that NICU babies getting discharged are eligible for. The latter isn't even a vaccine. It's an immune globulin. And they are refusing it.

"We'll get it at our first pediatrician appointment!"

No, they won't.

I've listened to fellow nurses...NURSES...talk about how the vaccinations are causing the diseases they are supposed to prevent. I've said my peace (this is not science and UNTRUE) and got up and walked out of these discussions.

I'm horrified. This will not be a safe place to live once people are getting cut down by vaccine-preventable illnesses because of pseudo-science woo.

During Covid he ordered the CDC to stop warning people even though he knew his orders would cause widespread deaths. That was early in epidemic, so those early cases later turned into thousands of cases each. Months later, Trump force CDC to change its testing guidelines to cause there to be fewer tests. They even said that if somebody lived in the same household with someone who had Covid they didn't need to get tested. Tests saved lives . Trump did not want more tests because he knew more tests meant more cases discovered and his numbers would get worse. Trump chose fewer warnings and tests because he was willing to have mass death if his image was better. He's a remorseless mass killing monster and he's at it again. I hope they talk about it this time.

. . . and what Brainworm did there. 80 died from measles, mostly children. If the same percentage of deaths occurred in the USA, it would be around 118,744. And that is just from measles.

In November 2019, when an epidemic of measles was killing children and babies in Samoa, Robert F. Kennedy Jr. — who in recent days became Donald Trump’s pick to lead the department of Health and Human Services — sent the prime minister of Samoa a four-page letter. In it, he suggested the measles vaccine itself may have caused the outbreak.

He claimed that the vaccine might have “failed to produce antibodies” in vaccinated mothers sufficient to provide infants with immunity, that it perhaps provoked “the evolution of more virulent measles strains” and that children who received the vaccine may have inadvertently spread the virus to other children. “Please do not hesitate to contact me if I can be of any assistance,” he added, writing in his role as the chairman of Children’s Health Defense, an anti-vaccine group.

At the time of his letter, 16 people, many of them younger than 2, were already reported dead. Measles, which is among the most contagious diseases, can sometimes lead to brain swelling, pneumonia and death. For months, families grieved over heartbreaking little coffins, until a door-to-door vaccination campaign brought the calamity to a close. The final number of fatalities topped 80.

I was in Samoa during that outbreak as part of my more than 16 years of reporting on the anti-vaccine movement. The cause of the outbreak was not the vaccine, but most likely an infected traveler who brought the virus from New Zealand, which that year had had the biggest measles outbreaks in decades, especially among that country’s Indigenous and Pacific Islander communities. Migration and poverty were likely factors in a sudden spread of measles in Samoa and New Zealand. But, as an editorial in The New Zealand Medical Journal reported, so too was a factor that Mr. Kennedy specializes in: “increasing circulation of misinformation leading to distrust and reduced vaccination uptake.” Samoa’s vaccination rates had fallen to fewer than a third of eligible 1-year-olds.
