Police officer became 'double agent' for Proud Boys, prosecutor says

WASHINGTON (AP) — A police officer accused of leaking confidential information to Proud Boys national leader Enrique Tarrio became a “double agent” for the far-right extremist group after its members burned a stolen Black Lives Matter banner in the nation’s capital, a federal prosecutor said Monday at the start of the officer’s trial.

Metropolitan Police Department Lt. Shane Lamond was a “Proud Boys sympathizer” who warned Tarrio about his impending arrest for the banner’s destruction and later lied to investigators about their communications, said the prosecutor, Joshua Rothstein.

“He knew the difference between right and wrong, and he knew it was a crime to lie to law enforcement,” Rothstein said during opening statements for Lamond’s trial. Lamond, who was arrested in May 2023, is charged with one count of obstruction of justice and three counts of making false statements. U.S. District Judge Amy Berman Jackson will decide the case after hearing testimony without a jury.

Ana Jara, one of Lamond’s attorneys, said describing the veteran officer as a Proud Boys sympathizer is inflammatory and “simply not true.” Jara said prosecutors are asking the judge to view “cherry-picked” messages between Lamond and Tarrio “in a vacuum” without the proper context.

How, regardless of context, is talking with Enrique Tarrio, look OK? My god! You have to be abso-fucking-lutely off your rocker; a whole plate of tacos shy of the combo platter; elevator won’t go all the way up, etc., etc., - pick your favorite idiom - to even suggest that a cop, texting Tarrio - especially after giving him a heads-up on his pending arrest, is OK, period. I don’t care if they were discussing where to meet for dinner. There’s no way any communication between a cop and Tarrio looks good…unless it’s face to face in an interrogation room. But that’s a different story.

The fact that some seem to think that, regardless of what he orders, the military won't follow it and law enforcement won't do it. Wrong. recruitments have been down for some time. They have been scraping the barrel to get people. Where do you think those people came from? I am taking bets on whether or not they came from predominately red areas of each state.

As a prime example the Phoenix PD received a scathing report from the DOJ regarding profiling and police brutality completely out of control and AFTER that they still engage in the most horrendous civil rights violations you can imagine].
