Democrats flip seat in California's Central Valley in nation's final outstanding House race
Source: Los Angeles Times
Democrats claimed the final congressional seat in the 2024 election cycle Tuesday as Merced Democrat Adam Gray ousted Republican incumbent Rep. John Duarte in a photo-finish race in Californias Central Valley.
Californias 13th Congressional District was the final outstanding race for the U.S. House of Representatives, and had the closest margin in the country. Gray was ahead by 187 votes when Duarte conceded Tuesday evening.
After trailing in the first three weeks of vote-counting, Gray took the lead on Nov. 26 as mail ballots tilted in his favor.
Gray, 47, said in a prepared statement Tuesday that he was honored to be elected and thanked the volunteers, voters, donors, campaign staff and family members who had helped him win.

(56,896 posts)Every whacko bill the Trumpanzees try to push through, and is just too awful for even some House Republicans, the few who remember what theyre there for might get a bug of some sort that keeps them bedridden the day of the vote. Such a pity that the awful bill went down because all Democrats were present, and a few disease-prone Republicans were not.
The next Senate wont have enough Republicans who know the word conscience to matter, but the House might.

(15,546 posts)last I heard, the GOP was up by a very small number.

(2,918 posts)That will go to 217-215 as Gaetz is not going to take his seat and two other Republicans are taking jobs in the Trump Administration.

(871 posts)We could theoretically have a majority in April because of the special elections for the 3 republicans who are leaving to join the administration. There will be special elections to replace them. So, if we dig down and get good candidates, we could potentially flip the house to Democratic control and force Drumpf to moderate and wreck his plans.

(204 posts)To make matters worse for House Republicans, Trump has selected Reps. Michael Waltz (R-Fla.) and Elise Stefanik (R-N.Y.) as his national security advisor and ambassador to the United Nations, respectively.
Both of their seats, along with that of Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-Fla.), who resigned in pursuit of a short-lived nomination for attorney general and said he will not retake his seat in January, won't be filled until the Spring.
While Waltz doesn't plan to resign until Jan. 20, Johnson will still be left with a 217-215 majority for some of the key first months of Trump's term.
and there's this that I don't know enough to comment on:
Republicans only won the House by 7,500 total votes in three congressional districts, Seth Abramson, NYT

I wonder if 2 House republicans will have a spine.
.
Yes, it was a joke. We all know they won't.

(36,413 posts)He had to rely on Hakeem Jeffries to deliver some votes.
And he has an even smaller majority now. So anything could happen!

(8,053 posts)Apparently the results should have been declared on election day, and curing votes is just another example of Democratic electoral corruption.
That's good news......not to be a downer but won't the seats that will be vacated by the Repubs. for the various reasons just be replaced by other repubs. in special elections?

(277 posts)There's also the chance a district could be purple & have a popular Democrat in the area run.
But they're short for NOW!

(7,111 posts)Not much chance of a flip in any of those districts. Trump's first couple of months would have to be a huge disaster to give Democrats a chance to gain seats there.
That said, the longer these seats remain open, the better our chances to win one or more.
DeSantis has announced an April 1st date to fill the vacancy in Gaetz's district. I wonder what kind of April Fool the Republicans will nominate to replace him.
The other seats could possibly go later, since they don't become vacant until the Senate confirms Waltz and Stefanik's appointments, and they formally resign from the House.
It could get interesting.

(102,511 posts)The fact that they keep getting reelected says more about their districts than anything.

(7,111 posts)It would require a change of consciousness of the electorate in these districts.
But then, Trump's idiotic plans for the nation could possibly provide an opening.
Okay?

(102,511 posts)But I would like to see Greene and Boebert flushed by any means.
...at 220 the (R)apists can only afford to lose two votes. Every Rapist district isn't the same, and the fact three Democrats flipped three purple districts in CA is going to at least make some Rs in the same situation think hard on what they vote for. Those are the kind of situations where the Indivisible Playbook can be of value.

(541 posts)that these GOP seats might have special elections after Orange Julius Caesar has taken his throne and people get a sense of what life will be like under his reign. These special elections will be the first time that all of those people who googled "Are tariffs bad?" and "Can I change my vote?" on election day will be able to voice their continued support...or not. Hopefully that will flip the NY seat, but who knows.

(3,314 posts)It's a minor miracle and a sign of integrity for a Republican incumbent who lost by only 180-some votes out of more than 250k cast to concede without throwing a tantrum per the Republican "rigged-election" playbook. Good on Mr. Duarte.
