California Gov. Gavin Newsom wants state lawmakers to help pad out his litigation fund to the tune of $25 million, according to his office, as they brace for legal attacks and federal overreach from President-elect Donald Trump.
The Governor is working with lawmakers to establish a litigation fund to bolster the states legal resources in response to the incoming federal administrations signaled policy proposals that would harm the state, Newsoms team said in a press release on Sunday. Working with the Legislature, the Governor is proposing a new litigation fund of up to $25 million for the California Department of Justice and state agencies to defend California from unconstitutional federal overreach, challenge illegal federal actions in court, and take administrative actions to reduce potential harm.
Newsom, who first announced the establishment of a new litigation fund on Nov. 7, had issued a proclamation last month convening a special session of the California Legislature to safeguard California values and fundamental rights in the face of an incoming Trump administration, according to his office. That special session is now beginning this week.
On Monday, legislation was introduced by California Assemblyman Jesse Gabriel, D-Encino, to set aside the $25 million that Newsom has asked for. An additional $500,000 was requested to help cover the costs of initial case preparation, according to Gabriels office. While we always hope to collaborate with our federal partners, California will be ready to vigorously defend our interests and values from any unlawful action by the incoming Trump Administration, Gabriel said in a statement.

(14,308 posts)This is one of the reasons I don't think I will ever leave California. At least I own my home already and I don't have to worry about that mortgage overhead even though cost of living is bullshit. But if the shit really hits the fan I know I've got some place to hide so to speak

(52,357 posts)especially when you are on a very limited income of less than $35,000 a year. However, when I watch the very hard earned pennies I saved I regard the price of living in CA as an insurance of sorts. I know my state will do whatever it can to help me pay my ACA subsidies and Climate Change issues as well as a zillion other ways my taxes benefit me a a CA resident. I receive what I pay in state taxes many times over what I "invested" in my CA taxes. I did the math many times and receive the same answer and that answer is that I DO benefit financially in the long run.
