Rep. Don Bacon (R-Neb.) said Friday that lawmakers could force another vote to release former Rep. Matt Gaetz's (R-Fla.) Ethics report if President-elect Trump brings him into a White House job.
Why it matters: Bacon's comments come a day after the House voted to block a resolution that would have forced the House Ethics Committee to make the report public. Just one Republican backed the effort by Rep. Sean Casten (D-Ill.).
"We felt we should follow precedents, but there's a whole bunch of us that if he's going to be nominated for a senior position, this will come back," Bacon told Axios.
Gaetz who has faced allegations of sexual misconduct with minors has vehemently denied wrongdoing.
The intrigue: A sizable number of Republicans, including Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.), have argued it would break precedent to release a report on a former member.
Casten slammed the notion that it would break precedent, posting on X: "The House Ethics Committee released reports on former Members in the 1980s, the 1990s & the 2000s. But House Republicans know this."
"I laid out these precedents in my resolution that was read aloud in front of the full House moments before they voted to hide the Gaetz Report," he added.
"It's an ongoing matter of public interest. We'll see if our former colleague is presented for any other administration positions. It certainly is not a moot matter," House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-N.Y.) told Fox.
