Dr. Oz agrees to stop promoting health and wellness products if confirmed, Trump transition says

Source: ABC News/AP

Mehmet Oz, the celebrity doctor picked by President-elect Donald Trump to oversee the country's Medicare and Medicaid programs, has agreed to stop promoting health and wellness products if confirmed by the Senate, according to a spokesperson for the Trump transition.

Likewise, Robert F. Kennedy Jr. – who recently raised eyebrows by appearing on his wife's social media account apparently showering naked in the background while she promoted her beauty line – also has agreed to disclose his finances and undergo a federal ethics review if confirmed as health secretary, said spokesperson Katie Miller.

"Both Mr. Kennedy and Dr. Oz plan to divest where appropriate and fully cooperate with the Office of Government of Ethics," Miller told ABC News. Whether Trump's nominees planned to follow traditional ethics rules that have governed Washington policymakers for decades had been an open question.

Trump has picked several billionaires to lead his Cabinet, while Kennedy and Oz promoted wellness companies in new online posts even after being named as part of the incoming administration. Experts say it's still possible for any nominee to try to test the bounds of ethics rules.

I mean really why would tfg’s team care. Tfg isn’t going to stop sales of anything. In reality if anything happens they will transfer over stuff to their spouses. Oz may not make ads but I’m sure he will help companies like his to sell even more quack medicine.

...to participate in his fucking fantasy austerity "department." There are like 14 billionaires in this cabinet who ain't giving up shit when it comes to their outside interests, so why do emoluments/conflicts matter in this ONE case and no other?

Back when Trump was "elected" in 2016, the very first thing the GOP did was dismiss the emoluments clause so he could take office. I knew in that very instant that was just the beginning of all this precedent-breaking, norm-destroying bullshit, and it's only snowballed from there.

... the damage has already been done. Any product, method or technique this "Oz" has promoted, shilled or sold would be give a greater authenticity if he were to hold an official position.

Too many would be likely to believe his previous positions or lies if he is given a position in charge of such important programs, Medicare and Medicaid, for the poor, the elderly and the middle class.

Oz doesn't deserve such a position, like trump he's a simple medicine show salesman.

that equals "business" to the GOP, and thus apparently needing a (schlock) "businessman" to run the thing.

The Surgeon General isn't operating anything really "financial".

45 already nominated a "TV Doctor" - Janette Nesheiwat - for Surgeon General.

(as a sidenote, I remember when CMS was HCFA - Health Care Finance Administration - then was changed to the "Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS)" under Shrub)

there is an assumption that adopting the title will engender the recipient with enhanced morals, a new approach to life, and enhanced intelligence.

It's a false assumption Republicans practise every day.

An alcoholic given an important position will just drink more.

A snake oil salesman given an important position will just try to sell more snake oil.

And a nutcase will just drink more unpasteurised milk.
