Trump picks hardline Republican Kari Lake to lead Voice of America

Source: Reuters

U.S. President-elect Donald Trump on Wednesday said he was picking Kari Lake, a former news anchor and a hardline Republican who failed to win an Arizona Senate seat last month, to be the director of U.S. government-funded media outlet Voice of America.

Trump, in a post on his Truth Social site, said Lake will "ensure that the American values of Freedom and Liberty are broadcast around the World FAIRLY and ACCURATELY, unlike the lies spread by the Fake News Media."

Lake, a strong Trump supporter who has echoed his false claims about fraud at the 2020 election, also lost the governor's race in swing state Arizona in 2022 and was previously an anchor at Phoenix-based Fox 10.

Voice of America (VOA) is an international media broadcaster that operates in more than 40 languages online and on radio and television.

Voice of America's appointment of Trump ally sparks purge fears

Democrats have warned that the new Trump-appointed head of the US global media agency that oversees Voice of America (VOA) and other broadcasters is planning a purge of career officials that could spell the end of its editorial independence.
...
Earlier this month, Trump persuaded Republican senators to confirm Michael Pack, a conservative film-maker and associate of the rightwing ideologue Steve Bannon, as the new head of the US Agency for Global Media (USAGM), even though Pack is currently under criminal investigation for allegedly diverting $1.6m in funds from a charity organisation he runs to his private film company, Manifold Productions.
...
Eliot Engel, the Democratic chair of the House foreign affairs committee, issued a late-night statement on Tuesday warning that Pack planned to fire the top ranks of USAGM career officials on Wednesday. On Wednesday morning, congressional aides said the feared purge appeared to have been put off after Engel’s intervention, but that the threat remained.

“My fear is that USAGM’s role as an unbiased news organization is in jeopardy under his leadership. USAGM’s mission is ‘to inform, engage, and connect people around the world in support of freedom and democracy’ – not to be a mouthpiece for the president in the run-up to an election,” Engel said in his statement.

https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2020/jun/17/voice-of-america-agency-purge-trump-ally-michael-pack

Pack resigned 2 hours after President Biden took office.

Federal inquiry details abuses of power by Trump's CEO over Voice of America

Within two days, Pack was examining ways to remove suspect staffers, a new federal investigation found. The executives he sidelined were later reinstated and exonerated by the inspector general's office of the U.S. State Department. Pack ultimately turned his attention to agency executives, network chiefs, and journalists themselves.

The report, sent to the White House and congressional leaders earlier this month, found that the Trump appointee repeatedly abused the powers of his office, broke laws and regulations, and engaged in gross mismanagement.
...
Taken together, they depict Pack's brief tenure as an ideologically driven rampage through a government agency to try to force its newsrooms and workforce to show fealty to the White House.

Pack punished executives who objected to the legality of his plans, interfered in the journalistic independence of the newsrooms under his agency, and personally signed a no-bid contract with a private law firm to investigate those employees he saw as opposed to former President Donald Trump. The law firm's fees reached the seven figures for work typically done by attorneys who are federal employees.

What would Project 2025 do for (or to) journalism?

By Pack’s side throughout all this was Morvared Namdarkhan, who goes by Mora Namdar professionally. She was Pack’s acting VP of legal, compliance, and risk — “compliance” not being one of the Pack regime’s strengths! — and she is the author of the Project 2025 chapter on USAGM. (Namdar is mentioned more than 50 times in the 145-page federal investigation into Pack’s tenure, the one that found he had “abused his authority” and “engaged in gross mismanagement and gross waste.”)

Namdar considers the USAGM “firewall” — meant to separate the journalism it produces from the influence of top political appointees — a tool to sneak in “anti-American propaganda” and bias:
...
Namdar complains about “the agency’s media organizations joining the mainstream media’s anti-U.S. chorus and denigrating the American story — all in the name of so-called journalistic independence. Indeed, content during the Trump Administration was rife with typical mainstream media talking points assailing the President and his staff.”

Her solutions? Personnel decisions that currently rest within USAGM must be moved to “the Department of Defense and the Office of Personnel Management.” Its budget should be cut to $700 million from 2023’s $885 million. USAGM “should report to the President and coordinate activities with the National Security Council,” to which there should be “clear lines of command” — or else putting the entire agency under the State Department.

Otherwise, shut the whole place down:

If the defacto aim of the agency simply remains to compete in foreign markets using anti-U.S. talking points that parrot America’s adversaries’ propaganda, then this represents an unacceptable burden to the U.S. taxpayer and a negative return on investment. In that case, the USAGM should be defunded and disestablished. If, however, the agency can be reformed to become an effective tool, it would be one of the greatest tools in America’s arsenal to tell America’s story and promote freedom and democracy around the world.

RIP Voice of America, Radio Free Asia, Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty.

Next year world audiences will read Islamophobic stories, anti-Iran narratives, pro-Russia tales, Christian value homilies, and corruption stories about Ukraine.

During Trumpf's first Reign of Error, he did not appoint an ambassador to Belize. This time, every single nook and cranny in the USG will be filled with GOP sycophants, kooks, kleptocrats, and quacks. There will be no room to breathe for Democratic civil servants.

Former Senate-confirmed positions
There are a number of positions that required Senate confirmation of appointees in the past, but do not today. The Presidential Appointment Efficiency and Streamlining Act of 2011 (Pub. L. 112–166 (text) (PDF)), signed into law on August 10, 2012, eliminates the requirement of Senate approval for 163 positions, allowing the president alone to appoint persons to these positions:[7] Parts of the act went into effect immediately, while other parts took effect on October 9, 2012, 60 days after enactment.[7]

Trump taps immigration hard-liner Kari Lake as head of Voice of America

The Associated Press
December 11, 2024, 10:53 PM

{snip}

The president-elect has in the past been a fierce critic of Voice of America, including saying in 2020 that “things they say are disgusting toward our country.”

The broadcaster drew additional criticism during Trump’s first term for its coverage of the early days of the coronavirus pandemic, with a White House publication, the “1600 Daily” email summary of news and events, accusing it of using taxpayer money “to speak for authoritarian regimes.” That was after VOA covered the lifting of lockdowns in the Chinese city of Wuhan, where the virus first emerged.

{snip}

Upon taking office in January 2021, President Joe Biden’s administration swiftly removed a number of senior officials aligned with Trump from VOA and positions affiliated with it.

{snip}

Also Wednesday, Trump announced Leandro Rizzuto as his choice to be the U.S. ambassador to the Washington-based Organization of American States, and said he wanted Florida personal injury attorney Dan Newlin to be his administration’s ambassador to Colombia. … He also picked Peter Lamelas, a physician and the founder of one of Florida’s largest urgent care companies, to be the U.S. ambassador to Argentina. Lamelas is also a large donor to the past campaigns of Trump and other top Republicans.

29. Kari Lake latest losing candidate set to join Trump's second term team

As Trump chooses Kari Lake to lead the Voice of America, a larger pattern is coming into focus: The president-elect is picking a lot of failed candidates.

Exactly eight years ago this week, there were reports of concerns among Voice of America officials that Donald Trump — in his first go-around as president-elect — might try to politicize the network’s coverage. Several years later, federal investigators determined that Michael Pack, a Trump-appointed official who helped oversee the VOA, did abuse the powers of his office.

Pack, it’s also worth noting, faced complaints from more than 30 whistleblowers during his tenure.

It’s against this backdrop that Trump is president-elect again, and he has someone new in mind for the network. NBC News reported:

President-elect Donald Trump announced Wednesday that he wants ally Kari Lake to be the next director of the Voice of America, a federal network that’s part of the U.S. Agency for Global Media. ... Lake said on X she was “honored” by Trump’s announcement. “Under my leadership, the VOA will excel in its mission: chronicling America’s achievements worldwide,” she said.

As NBC News’ report added, “The VOA’s stated mission is not to promote America’s achievements; rather, its website says it is ‘committed to providing comprehensive coverage of the news and telling audiences the truth.’”.....

As for Trump’s motivations, The New York Times published a related analysis that noted, “It’s a surprising development for a political figure who has long deployed the word ‘loser’ as an insult, and who tried to overturn the 2020 election rather than admit he lost it. But some of these Republicans lost their races in part because of their support for Trump — which means losing can make for winning politics in Washington when loyalty to Trump is the coin of the realm.”

All of which suggests the so-called “Team of Losers” list might yet grow longer.

There is long, detailed explanation of how the VOA is run.

Trump says Kari Lake will lead Voice of America. He attacked it during his first term

President-elect Donald Trump says Kari Lake, a local television news anchor-turned-MAGA politician, will lead the federally funded broadcaster Voice of America.

If successful, the move would put a loyalist at the helm of a news outlet that Trump sought to bring to heel under his appointee during the final year of his first term. Trump officials sought to strip the network and its parent agency of their independence during his first term, including actions later found to be illegal and in one case, unconstitutional.

But Trump doesn't have the authority to unilaterally install Lake; the hire is dependent on a bipartisan board beneath the chief executive of its parent agency........................

.........."Under my leadership, the VOA will excel in its mission: chronicling America's achievements worldwide," Lake tweeted.

That's not exactly the organization's stated mission, however. On its website, it says it is "committed to providing comprehensive coverage of the news and telling audiences the truth."
