The federal appeals court that last week rejected TikTok's attempt to overthrow its pending ban denied the company's request Friday that sought to pause the ruling and the Jan. 19 deadline for a sale.
The company, which has been forced by a federal law to sell to a new owner or be banned in the U.S., requested the emergency pause earlier in the week arguing it would afford the Supreme Court time to determine whether it should review the law.
However, the D.C. Circuit judges said that Congress made a "deliberate choice" to set a 270-day time frame for the sale-or-ban, "subject to one (and only one) extension."
"The petitioners have not identified any case in which a court, after rejecting a constitutional challenge to an Act of Congress, has enjoined the Act from going into effect while review is sought in the Supreme Court," the judges wrote in the unsigned order. TikTok has not immediately commented about the order.

(14,985 posts)I’ve been on Facebook, Instagram, and TikTok, and of the three TikTok has been the most informative and the least censoring.
Before the beginning of this election year, TikTok was extremely informative about Republican antics. After the congressional edict, there was a large influx of Republican influencers, which had not been present before the election year. They were young often people of color and I think it played a huge role in The election outcome.
I think Republicans targeted TikTok because of their inability to control the ownerscensorship like Trump does for instance, with Zuckerberg on Facebook and other Republican controlled platforms.
The sale of TikTok to Americans or it’s loss altogether will be a loss in an information starved political landscape.

(6,471 posts)It's banned in China because it's made to spread CCP propaganda internationally. That's why Tiktok has douyin in China. That spreads internal CCP propaganda.
Good riddance to CCP propaganda mills.

Me: "Is that from Amazon?"
Him: "No it's from TikTok"
He seems to like it and he seems to gravitate toward the hobby stuff??? I think
Anyway, I felt the app too intrusive and constantly sending me notices, so I disabled the notices, then it didn't work. So, who wants to get a zillion notices from an app that you don't particularly like?
I like BlueSky, although I have not joined. I will probably join over there. So far, I like what I've seen of BlueSky. However, I don't think there is money to be made on BlueSky.
I think the appeal of TikTok was the money that was made. The whole "influencer" concept.
However people can make money off YouTube. Although it requires more effort than TikTok.
A few do it from FB, but not that much anymore.
