An unvaccinated school-aged child in Texas has died of measles, the first associated with an outbreak in the western part of the state that has infected more than 100 people.
...............
In a press release, the Texas Department of State Health Services (DSHS) said the child was hospitalized in the northwestern city of Lubbock last week and tested positive for measles.
As of Wednesday, 124 cases of measles have been confirmed associated with the outbreak, according to data from DSHS.
Almost all of the cases are in unvaccinated individuals or individuals whose vaccination status is unknown, and 18 people have been hospitalized so far, DSHS said........................................

"Kennedy appeared to downplay the outbreak, noting there have been four outbreaks so far this year compared to 16 last year. However, the number of cases in Texas alone amount to nearly half of the 285 cases confirmed in 2024."
"It's not unusual; we have measles outbreaks every year," he said.

.............The US declared measles "eliminated" in 2000, but the country has seen outbreaks in recent years amid a rise in anti-vaccine sentiment. The last US measles death was in 2015, according to the Infectious Diseases Society of America.
The current outbreak is centred in north-western Texas, with measles also recently found across the state's border in New Mexico, as well as Alaska, California, Georgia, New Jersey, New York City and Rhode Island, according to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC).

(9,480 posts)IMHO, they should be arrested.
Recently, the parents of an eight (8) y.o. in Australia (who are part of a fanatical Christian sect) have been tried and convicted for being responsible for the death of their daughter who was Diabetic but they refused to give her her Insulin.
I know it's two different situations but IMHO the mindsets are similar. The "Christians" thought they could pray the Diabetes away..... (not using critical thinking skills). I believe they were sentenced to 14 years in prison.
Most likely the parents in TX have allowed themselves to be anti-vaxxers; believing what non-educated YouTubers and Podcasters say and think as opposed to Doctors and Scientists who've studied and devoted their lives to working on eliminating diseases, controlling diseases, finding cures for diseases, etc.......(not using critical thinking skills).

(698 posts)but this child didn't have to die. vaccines would have prevented the measles outbreak and perhaps this child wouldn't have died.

(2,682 posts)That there’s a fairly large Mennonite community in that area and they don’t vax because of religious beliefs. I have no idea if that’s the case here but I’m sure the unvaccinated population are helping to spread it and their religion can’t do a thing to keep them from getting/giving it.

(1,555 posts)I cannot speak to this particular family but many people have been misled and it is not necessarily a
religious thing. Mennonites are known as one of the three historic peace churches that work all over the world
helping people get food, clean water and obtain health care. They often work where others cannot
because they are apolitical. Much has been written about their impact on the care of the mentally ill which came about as the result of conscientious objectors and their experiences working in institutions during the war. They had a strong influence in developing mental health facilities in the San Joaquin valley until Reagan made
cuts to mental health treatment--just one example. I have never known Mennonites to refuse health care. This may seem like a rant, but over the years I have read just too many false characterizations of a faith that is generally quite progressive.

assumptions regarding religion. Need some facts and knowledge of the circumstance.
