Trump administration investigating California law against 'forced outing'

Federal officials are probing the California Department of Education claiming school districts are withholding information from parents about their child’s gender identity.

The move triggered furious pushback from California Democrats, who defended the state law signed by Gov. Gavin Newsom last year that banned transgender and gay students from being outed to their parents.

The U.S. Department of Education announced the investigation Thursday morning, noting concerns that state education officials “played a role” in violating federal law by “socially transition[ing] children at school while hiding minors’ ‘gender identity’ from parents.”

The Agriculture Department backed the effort later on Thursday, with Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins telling Newsom in a letter that the USDA was reviewing research and education-related funding in California.
