Utah Becomes First State to Ban Fluoride in Public Water
Source: NYT
Medical experts warn the move could have consequences for oral health, especially among children.
Utah has become the first U.S. state to outlaw the addition of fluoride to public drinking water.
The law, which was signed by Gov. Spencer Cox on March 27 and will go into effect on May 7, comes amid renewed scrutiny of fluoride, a mineral that has been widely added to U.S. drinking water since 1945 to prevent cavities. Although controversy over the safety of water fluoridation first arose in the 1940s, concerns have intensified in recent years, driven in part by new research on fluoridation and by growing resistance to public health interventions since the pandemic.
In November, Robert F. Kennedy Jr., now the federal health secretary, said that the Trump administration would “advise all U.S. water systems to remove fluoride from public water” because of potential health risks. Anti-fluoridation bills have also been introduced in North Dakota, Tennessee and Montana.
Much of the concern centers on the possible cognitive effects in children. In one recent review of studies, researchers concluded that high levels of prenatal or childhood fluoride exposure were linked with lower I.Q. s in childhood. But the fluoride levels associated with cognitive problems were more than twice as high as the levels people are generally exposed to through community water fluoridation, said Dr. Scott Tomar, a public health dentist and oral epidemiologist at the University of Illinois Chicago.

Yes, ignorance is expensive.

(6,856 posts)I avoid ingesting fluoride due to science on bone health and thyroid disorders. Others are concerned about scientific reviews and studies on children/intelligence.
I think this is a very emotional issue and I have been asking people to read the current science rather than lean into the old movie. It was great fun in the 1960s and the John Birch Society members deserved ridicule on many grounds. However there are millions of children in the US today with dental caries despite living in areas with water fluoridation.

(4,146 posts)It is interesting though, my granddaughter lives in CA and is almost 3. Her pediatrician put her on fluoride supplements as their house has a water filtration system. Those systems as a side effect of their action, remove fluoride along with harmful chemicals and impurities and the good docs figured this out and have a counter move.

(Not in Utah but stupid ideas like this tend to spread like wildfire)

(7,583 posts)Fluoride may be good for your teeth, but it's bad for the rest of your body. It interferes with proper function of the Thyroid gland, and can result in a weakened immune system.
Although some fluoride is needed in the body, putting in the drinking water can easily result in taking in too much of it, and creating a toxic effect.
I suggest using a fluoride toothpaste, and/or mouth wash instead.
I worked in the Pharmaceutical Industry for about 36 years, and knew several people in research who were well aware of the problems with putting it in your drinking water.
If your drinking water has fluoride, I suggest a filter to remove it from water for drinking and cooking.
Here is an article that describes the problems with fluoride in the water supply:

Note: Robert Kennedy Jr. is an idiot. I don't support his positions on medicine in general; they're based on ignorance, and are often dangerous.

(5,554 posts)* and it's the reason he wears dentures today. I've seen photos of him as a child (along with his brothers and sisters) and they all had missing or rotted or malformed teeth. His oldest brother was wearing a full set of dentures at age 17.
This anti-fluoride movement is as idiotic as the anti-vax movement.
