Why Aren't We Talking About Trump's Fascism?

July 5, 2024

Donald Trump’s authoritarianism, which culminated in his refusal in 2021 to accede to the peaceful transfer of power and his incitement of a mob that attacked Congress, is well known. It has not receded in time but has only gotten worse. On Monday, The New York Times carried a story with this shocking headline: “Trump Amplifies Calls to Jail Top Elected Officials, Invokes Military Tribunals.”

According to the article:

Former President Donald J. Trump over the weekend escalated his vows to prosecute his political opponents, circulating posts on his social media website invoking “televised military tribunals” and calling for the jailing of President Biden, Vice President Kamala Harris, Senators Mitch McConnell and Chuck Schumer and former Vice President Mike Pence, among other high-profile politicians.

Mr. Trump, using his account on Truth Social on Sunday, promoted two posts from other users of the site that called for the jailing of his perceived political enemies.

One post that he circulated on Sunday singled out Liz Cheney, the former Wyoming congresswoman who is a Republican critic of Mr. Trump’s, and called for her to be prosecuted by a type of military court reserved for enemy combatants and war criminals.

Too stupid to realize that tax cuts won't mean much if you don't have a job. Say hello to state run media.

convicted of 34 felonies.

It seems to me there is an acceptance of his criminality but when you consider how the press covers the GOP in general, this is what they often do. For example, they know how serious climate change is, but do they keep in the headlines who is always blocking legislation? No, not to my satisfaction. There is only one planet, they live on it too.

... is "Joe Biden has created a distraction from the existential question that should define this election," which the article goes on to support.

I'm glad fascism is being discussed but it's disingenuous for Heer, as a member of the media, to lay the blame at Biden's feet for "creating a distraction."
Like he wore a short skirt and the media had no part what's been following.

Heer is an honest good guy in my book. If Obama wanted a correction I believe he would have made one.

But for months, Obama has shared with Biden and friends his deep concerns about Trump’s political strengths and the real possibility he is elected again in November. In December, during a private lunch at the White House, Obama discussed the need for Biden to empower his campaign apparatus, suggesting he install a more senior-level decision-maker at the Wilmington headquarters. The next month, Jennifer O’Malley Dillon and Mike Donilon left the White House to serve as campaign chair and chief strategist, respectively.

Why then, they would surely focus on Project 2025, the Supreme Court, all the things we want them to focus on -- they will, right? Right?
