I Was Kaepernick's Lawyer. I Remember What Trump Did.
Written by Ben Meiselas
As we head into the weekend, you may catch an NFL game. I want to reflect on that for a moment. Before I started MeidasTouch, I was a litigator, and in 2017, I served as the lead lawyer for NFL quarterback Colin Kaepernick. Kaepernick peacefully took a knee to show respect for unarmed Black and brown people who were killed by police.
At first, the NFL supported Kaepernick taking a knee. But then, in September 2017, Donald Trump gave a speech in Huntsville, Alabama, saying, Get that son of a bitch off the field, and claimed Kaepernicks protest was anti-American. MAGA forces attacked Kaepernick, arguing that his protest insulted the National Anthem and the military.
Kaepernick never played in the NFL again.
The same people who attacked Kaepernick and LeBron Jamestelling Black athletes to shut up and dribbleare now encouraging NFL players to do Donald Trumps idiotic YMCA dance. A propaganda campaign is underway to turn the NFL and all professional sports into a political arm of Trump. This is straight out of the fascist playbook.

We have been sold out for money and power.
The greatest democracy in the history of the world.
Gone.

(33,829 posts)I know there are people right here at DU that want us to center and be conciliatory to those people. I'm not.
THEY did this. THEM. And they weren't tricked. They know what and who they voted for.

(511 posts)In reality, it is comfort to be here in the Democratic underground and hear similar people but at some point, its got to be taken out there into the streets and maybe Trump will make a mistake and put the military on us and kill some people and then the shit storm will happen.
Part of me says you have to provoke them to make mistakes and then make their mistakes, political nightmare
The only thing I see missing seems to be damn leaders. I dont know where theyre at. I know that the Kentucky governor was down here in New Orleans, talking to Louisiana Democrats, but where are all the other leaders they should be out there and outspoken

(1,874 posts)The US sports empire insidiously linked blind patriotism to football, baseball, basketball, etc etc. Mr. Kaepernick never had a chance. And how many NFL teams could have used a mobile, talented NFC Champion QB these past several years? (The 49ers lost that classic Sibling Superbowl to the Ravens).
Does any European country open up a soccer, hockey, or basketball game with a national anthem or military display? I lived in Europe years ago and don't remember.
(Full disclosure: I carried a rifle as an Honor Guard for a basketball game last century).

So if you're watching the NFL or college football this weekend, I encourage you to reflect on Kaepernick's bravery and what it meant for our country."

(2,998 posts)If they all stood tall and said, "I will not play as long as that criminal is in office," guess what would would happen. People love their football, basketball, baseball, hockey, soccer, volleyball, women's basketball, women's soccer. Hell, even Pickleball, more than they give a shit about TSF.
The people would revolt. If college football suddenly shut down... guess what would happen.
