I'm kind of surprised when people say, "I saw on Facebook" or "I posted on Facebook". When I titled the post the DU auto fill completed it to "Facebook is so fucking evil." So that's my opinion. What about you?

I have never had a Facebook account. I don't want "people finding me". Ew.

I have to for work. But I block my webcam and audio port and speak Tagalog backwards when I'm on it. Also wear vinyl gloves.

I have a Facebook account. A burner account. I just have it if I need one to login somewhere else or see something.

I have a Facebook account. I happen to like the platform. For me it works.

as all of the information you give your family is Bogus, and I was like "ME TOO!" but then figured out you meant Facebook.
Good for you. Confuse them as much as possible!

(24,087 posts)with a fake name. I use it to like local businesses and restaurants so that I know about events, specials etc. I do not post anything personal or share photos of myself or my kid etc. I dont have any FB friends as a result. I have a FB page for our family business too. I absolutely hate it but we get a crap ton of free advertising through it that translates into sales. I do not allow any political opinions on the page or entertain FB messenger propaganda that comes our way. Anybody that tries that gets an earful from me. Ive never understood the FB fascination...it seems bizarre to want to post personal information about my life.

(1,483 posts)I loved LiveJournal, I thought it was a beautiful platform. When Facebook came along with it's edu snobbery I was like,
"No. Thanks. Ew. And the interface is UGLY!"
But yeah. There it is.
For the work account I friended and was friended by about 500,000 Nigerians.
I have enjoyed scrolling through and looking at their birthday parties, I must be honest. And people are so nice to each other on Nigerian facebook. US Facebook doesn't get a curiosity scroll.

(152,472 posts)My family is there, and quite a few DUers plus my poetry friends and political friends.
I use it to stay in touch with all these good people. I do not see it as "evil."
I'm sure it can be, but not the way I use it. I avoid games and tests since those are ways to intrude into my life.
It suits me.

(10,136 posts)Most are out of town friends or relatives that I miss - we usually just post pics of our pets & kids to amuse one another...

(1,483 posts)I was Jackie Kennedy - but people were treating me like I was kind of dumb on occasions when I wasn't actually being dumb.
There is a halo effect with the avatar pics. Whenever someone with RFK's pic posts I'm always like, "Ooh this will be very thoughtful..." lol. It usually is, but it's funny that I prejudge. Also Frederick Douglass, I'm like "Ooh what does Frederick Douglass avatar have to say about this.."

(26,847 posts)Yes, I have a FB account because I find it useful.
I have one. It's not my only means of keeping up, but it does allow me to keep up with many people I'd have no other good way to contact.
Also, a year and a half ago when there was a death in the family, it was truly wonderful for contacting and informing people.

(1,483 posts)Says "I have a Facebook account. Everyone is there. All my groups."
You're right that I let my own bias tilt the result so I'm going to go back and add an option for people who use Facebook without feeling all conflicted about it and etc.

(26,847 posts)Not everyone is there. Not all of the groups I consider myself a part of.
I'm being picky, I know.

I don't remember my exact phrasing. Let me know if you want me to change it.

(11,463 posts)Unfortunately there are 3 organizations that I'm a member of that are on Facebook. They also have regular websites, but these are not updated very often. To know what is going on, one has to visit their Facebook page, and it's also the only way to interact with other group members (the regular web sites don't have any kind of message board).
I think the interface is crappy. Like I say, I use it but don't like it. And on top of that, I'm well aware of the scandals of leaking private information, being a troll farm's best option for spreading misinformation, and so on.
There are also restaurants whose only web presence is Facebook.
