(18,187 posts)I specifically chose the Parker House Hotel in Boston because it is a classic hotel that created both Boston Cream Pie and Parker House Rolls. This was probably 15 years ago. They were undergoing a major renovations. The couple in front of me checking out were complaining loudly about the renovation and the noise, then it was my turn to check in. I raved about how beautiful the lobby was and how happy I was to be there in the home of Boston Cream pie and Parker House rolls. I had a corporate rate, so normally Id get a standard room. The clerk said, Ive got a nice room for you. Turned out to be the Honey Fitzgerald Suite!

Which to me is nuts! I like em all!

Peanuts and cashews are OK... they are not nuts.
coconuts and hazelnuts are actual nuts, but they are OK because their evolution is so different than almonds, walnuts, pecans, etc.

(19,033 posts)Peanuts and cashews are not nuts? That's news to me. But, if I'm being honest, I am a little nuts!

(20,590 posts)But I've never found one better than the recipe on the bottle of dark Karo syrup. It uses dark Karo and white sugar. My special touch is to toast the pecans in some melted butter first. It really develops the nuttiness of the pecans.
That being said, I love tart fruit pies as well.
my secret is more pecans. By about 50%. But the Karo recipe just works!
TexasBushwhacker
(20,590 posts)I think the main thing is that by using white sugar (rather than brown sugar or some other combo) it caramelizes and you get that slightly smokey flavor that is just DIVINE!
I've tweaked it a bit by adding a bit of flour or corn starch to the mix to make sure the "pudding" part of it sets. Just a tablespoon or 2. If course, it never hurts to use MORE PECANS!

(825 posts)My mum did a double treat peach pie where you simmer half the peaches in syrup, then pour over the other half of fresh peach slices in a baked shell. Tossing some toasted pecans in there would be some next-level shit

(18,383 posts)Not to brag.
My sister's m-i-l made apple pies that transported us My kids could make pie, but they are low-carb, g-f, so any pie they make is a piece of fresh fruit and imagination
If I make pie, I discovered that even a tbs of real lard makes a huge difference in the crust. I don't do that anymore because they are also vegetarian and I shouldn't have it myself.
Ah well. Other people discuss their exciting travels. I discuss my culinary adventures.

Soooo good.
Unfortunately, some years later when they went big - they changed it some. Never as good.

(51,144 posts)Some of my better pies:
A pudding pie made as follows:
Bottom layer: Chocolate pudding with chopped walnuts stirred in
Middle layer: Vanilla pudding with pumpkin pie spice added. Last year the only way I could get any pumpkin pie spice was to buy a half-pound of it; I've got to do SOMETHING with this shit. (It works absolutely awesome in my chocolate-chip snickerdoodles, though. Way better than just cinnamon.)
Top layer: Chocolate pudding with coconut stirred in
It needs to be homemade pudding, not that stuff in the boxes.
Meringue pie using bottled key lime juice instead of lemon juice.
Huckleberry pie, preferably with huckleberries I picked myself. I'm a little reticent to go huckleberry picking these days though; not only are the forests here full of MAGAts with guns, there have been enough bear attacks on huckleberry pickers to scare anyone out of the woods.
Let me give you my pie crust recipe.
2 cups flour
1 stick of butter
1 egg
If you used unsalted butter, add a little bit of salt, not much though - I use less than 1/8 teaspoon
Soften the butter by letting it sit on the counter for an hour before cutting it into the flour, then add the egg to form dough. I started using butter instead of shortening or lard because I hate measuring shortening.
