I called up the RG to tell him about how I saved a snake today. He is in Georgia. He responded, "I saved a snake, too." How odd is that? We both saved snakes today!
I told my story first.
I walked in the utility room door from outside and found a label from some packaging on the floor of the kitchen. It was a sticky label from a snack package that I had earlier torn off and threw in the trash, however, it must have landed on the floor and I didn't notice it.
As I picked up the label, it felt a little heavy for a mere piece of paper. I turned it over and there was a little baby garter snake stuck to it! Only his little head was moving. His entire body except for his head was stuck to this label.
I said, "Oh, poor little guy, let me see if I can help you!" I got a popsicle stick and began gently nudging him. He came off pretty easily. When he was about a third of the way free of the sticky label, I took him outdoors. He slithered away very quickly. Was he ever happy to be free of the sticky label!
I've never had a baby snake in my kitchen before, but back here in the woods, there's no end to the wildlife interaction. I'm just glad I found him before my kitty did.
Then the RG told his story, which is actually kind of funny.
He is visiting his son and his DIL has a garden around which she has put metal mesh fencing, maybe like chicken wire or whatever. The RG happened to be crossing by the garden when he saw a King snake caught in the fence.
He went to help it, but started laughing when he saw why it was caught in the fence: it had swallowed some vegetable which made his "midriff", so to speak, a little too large and now he could not get out the way he got in.
The RG freed the snake from his snacking adventure, and he, too, slithered away very quickly.
Two snake misadventures, but a happy ending.
Is that an unusual coincidence or what?
