The DU Lounge
Related: Culture Forums, Support ForumsWould any DU plumbers/remodlers give me an estimate for a tub to shower conversion
The house is 68, I'm 67, tub area was upgraded in 2008. Midwest ranch with bath on main floor. My knees suck.
I did a little google-fu, but the blind leads want too much info at this point.
Thx

(6,516 posts)it depends on your area and exactly what you want done. In my north Florida area, we wanted to take out our tub and put in an ADA shower for my disabled wife. A roll-in or walk-in shower in a small bathroom. No other remodeling or cosmetic changes. Both our current tub and the shower we wanted were pre-made and you just needed to remove the tub inset and install the new shower. No tile work or upgrades.
The estimates we got were around $5000.00. That included labor and materials. I hope this helps.

(922 posts)Since it was one piece of the whole, I don't know what to estimate but I wanted to let you know there are different options (I did not know this at the time and would have picked the other one if I had).
If you are using your existing drain, You will have a small step over into the shower. About 4-5 inches tall. Once you get out, it will take forever for the bottom to dry unless you squeegee the water toward the drain. Your existing drain is probably not big enough to remove the water as fast as it comes into the shower. That means a flatter floor to slow the water's progress toward the drain which would otherwise result in a backup. It also explains the larger step-over.
If you get a bigger drain installed - which I am sure would add to the price - you would have less of a step-over and a more sharply angled (How noticeable? Alas I will never know.) floor that will drain better without leaving puddles behind.
I didn't know these options existed and it never even occurred to me to ask. I'm coming from tub world, ya know? I only found out when I called to tell them that the new shower didn't seem to be draining properly.
A little late for me but I like to warn others. Ask for the price for each. At least you'll get a choice.

(4,248 posts)So I found a shower chair that straddles the front edge of the tub. Just sit on the part of the chair that is out of the tub, as you slide over move one leg at a time.
I was renting so I could not remodel. They usually cost less than $100.

(9,395 posts)I went with the $5k which was a tile job. It is approx. 4 x 5 and included a built in tile bench seat with a shower wand to take a shower while sitting, plus a stand shower. Also 3 hand rails and 3 cut outs to hold shampoo and soap and stuff. The price included removal of the old garden tub that came with the house, but not the glass door and panel for the new shower. I had a separate glass contractor/installer for that which was another $1500.
Be careful getting quotes, especially from one day companies. It would be easy to leave a lot of money on the table in this line of services. Im in eastern NC.
