Years (lots of years) ago, I started to watch it, got as far as the horse, and stopped.
In the last few years I managed to make it through ALL of "Breaking Bad" and I loved it. (Yes, I had to turn my head at a lot of stuff.)
If I can get through "Breaking Bad" and it's violence, should I give "The Godfather" another try?

(9,559 posts)Definitely. I The original movie was good, and was pretty faithful to the book. I never got into the movie sequels, and I don't think I've watched any of them all the way thru.

(213 posts)I have seen all of them along with Goodfellas. I cant stand any of them.
They may have good acting or whatever artistic value some people see in them. But I hate being reminded of how awful people are, so I avoid movies like that in general, not just mob movies.

(2,403 posts)Breaking Bad illustrates how insidiously ordinary people can be seduced into drug trafficking, In my opinion The Godfather is just another glamorization of the Mafia.

(15,561 posts)I'm in my early 50s, and I finally got through both around the same time less than 10 years ago. The book sat me on edge because Puzo would drop out of the narrative to define an Italian or mob term, which made me feel like I was reading, "Johnny's First Mob Primer." The movie? Eh, okay way to spend 3 hours. Honestly, Marlon Brando is hit or miss for me as well.
It just... insists upon itself.

(1,317 posts)I have this weird kind of rule about violent movies. I finally figured out I cant watch a movie if it is something that could potentially happen. The Godfather falls into that category, as does Chainsaw Massacre, Halloween, No Country For Old Men, or Breaking Bad.
The exception is if I dont think it could happen (Alien, A Quiet Place), or if there is a compelling moral reason to watch (The Killing Fields or Schindlers List), and even then I have to build up the nerve to watch it.
Ive never been able to get around that rule, lol! Ive met a few people who look at it the same way but most think it is odd.
Oh well!

(8,254 posts)The original was so good because it started off very realistically and slowly and they really sell it. But the underlying premise is a bit far-fetched.

(8,816 posts)Well, two of my favorite movies are Casino and especially Goodfellas (which IMHO is a masterpiece). Having said that, I saw The Godfather years ago when it first came out and I thought it was good but not nearly as good as some I've seen in later years (mentioned above). I should probably watch it again as an entre to watch The Godfather Part II which everyone says is better and excellent.
I'm a HUGE Breaking Bad fan and consider it the best show in the history of television....just my 2 cents......

I didn't notice any of the symbolism things like oranges meaning death until much later. One thing I never got about "The Godfather" was that throughout the movies Michael keeps saying everything's about family, his children. What? No.
