I am 77. The Fed says the ideal inflation rate is 2 percent. Multiple 2 times 50 and you have 100% inflation over 50 years. Higher education is worse. I went to a state college for about $2000 a year. Northwestern was $8000 a year, which is less than now.

A lot of things, like health care and higher education inflated over 100%. That's because Reagan and the Republicans thought evertlything should be for profit. Guess who pays for the profit.

Since you were born (1947, right?) consumer prices have jumped by around 39 quadrillion times.

That's 39,000,000,000,000,000 - or 64% a year on average, or 4.2% a month.

Every month.

There's a joke in a hit theater play from a few years ago down there, in which an exasperated housewife is wondering how she'll pay the bills this month (after another sharp utility rate hike by some RW gov't.).

Her senile father suddenly remembers that he kept the proceeds from the sale of his parents' home, in the 1960s, in a suitcase in the attic.

"But - why didn't you deposit that at the bank, dad?" she wails.

"I don't trust banks," the older man huffs.

"Well, let's see," she starts. "In 1970, they removed 3 zeros from the currency; in '83, 4 zeros; in '85, 3 zeros; and in '92, 4 more."

"So if you can find me 10 million suitcases full of old money just like that one, I can go the corner store and get us something for dinner."

Qué será.

You can see where I'm going with this ...

The plant had a company store which would sell fresh made bread and Hostess goodies.
The Twinkies, Cupcakes, SnoBalls & pies were 10¢ each and the loafs of bread were 25¢ each.
The bread would be rolled out into the store and the bags were still puffy from the heat of the bread,
so we knew the bread was just freshly made.

Just walking past it gave off an aroma that made you go into the store.

Whenever we had so much as a dime in our pocket, we'd head over and pick up a treat.
My mom would give me $1, and told me to pick up 4 loaves of bread after school.
I hated that, because not only were we walking home with our school books, now I have to
carry a grocery bag filled with fresh bread and I had to get it home without squashing the bread.
In Indiana, at that time, there was no sales tax on food or medicine.

that carried damaged loaves to trash bins. The operator would let us take as many loaves as we wanted since they were being disposed of.😋

Real estate is one of the few investments that keeps up with inflation. I'm not sure a 401K can keep up.

back in ye olde days. Back before cameras, of course, but also before phones and other quick cop-summoning devices. Why not just roll into a town where you are unknown, put on a low key disguise, and get ya some free money?
