(1,317 posts)One neighbor always gave us candied apples at Halloween. We had to go there - moms orders. Yuk.
After we went home and changed costumes for the second run we skipped her house for the houses that gave us the good stuff the first time.
Yes I know. Bad, bad. Very bad!!

(90,847 posts)Kinds of apple worth a damn; MacIntosh and Courtland. They both have flavor and texture and are both great for cooking. Courtalnds are big apples and I recall we used to core them, fill the hole with yummy stuff and bake them as a dessert. I'll pass on other kinds, I never buy apples unless I'm getting fresh Macs.

(3,801 posts)But I buy them to feed the deer around here in the summer. (started one year where I noticed I could see the rib cages of the deer in my area in summer, when everything is crispy dry and dead)
I always try to buy the least expensive (man has the cost gone up!). I bought some just last Friday, Crisp Apple. They look good, taste good, but oddly, the seeds were already starting to sprout in this last batch. That is OK, deer like the sprouted seeds too.
Today the deer got cut up zucchini and yellow neck squash, and carrots, and I added 2 apples to the mix. (zucchini, carrots, and squash all cost less than apples. So the deer get more. I used to only get apples, but got way too expensive for me and my fixed income)
Some may ask why I spend my $ on this and my answer is: The wildlife around here is my entertainment! It is worth the $ to me.

(2,889 posts)I had a customer who said her husband only bought red delicious apples from the grocery store. Lamenting the fact that the fall was the best time to buy apples and there were so many apples that tasted better.
I suggested that maybe he didn't like apples... She thought that was great.

(9,608 posts)I live in a community that was an Orchard. Still the bottom half of the community is an active orchard with a massive fruit stand just down the road. The bakery is world class and ships nationwide. The apples come from right here, and the crisps are straight off the trees.

Sometimes I like granny, only very crisp macs (they get soft later on), cortland.
Pink lady, honey crsp & jon gold.
My favorite is Winesap; a sweet-tart apple with as the name implies a faint winey taste. 👍

(497 posts)The only thing this apple has going for it is its appearance. It is good looking, but it is not a good eating apple or a good cooking apple.
