Got 4 alerts my SS# is on the dark web. Ive been waiting for this and I'm very upset.
Its the big hack. I was told "billions" by the id-monitoring dude. Froze my credit accounts and put fraud alert on them. Don't know what a Social Security "freeze" means. Don't want a problem there.
Will have to get credit reports. Fourth hack. Real upset, but told this is how it is now. There seems to be no consequences to companies for their sloppiness protecting data.
Just down. I did every thing to avoid this. Strongly recommend you get monitoring. I have 2

(2,168 posts)after a big company gets hacked, and the hackers have all your data, the company offers you a "free year of letting you know when you are getting ripped off" provided by some allied "security" company that they have partnered with.
After that one year, you then have to pay the stinking so-called "data security company" to get them to let you know with an alert when you are getting shafted again.

(3,517 posts)I had a wells fargo account opened in my name, correct name and address, even sent a debit card with a pin. So far so good, my info with SS number was also on the dark web but with all my old addresses in Colorado. I called wells fargo, they are aware. I just keep a look out for suspicious activity, they will not get much, I am on SSDI

(18,431 posts)Happened to me as well.
You're smart in doing what you did, but I never take any action.
In my case however, I do a spreadsheet every morning that updates my finances. Part of that process includes the detailed monitoring of my credit cards, so I would quickly see any anomalies.
I also get snail mail about every week that tells me that some company I am affiliated with has been hacked, and my data has been compromised. It's been happening for years.
My email address has appeared on the dark web hundreds of times over the years.
I haven't had a problem yet.

(43,096 posts)I recently got an email from my credit union telling me there was a security breach within the last few months and several thousand accounts could be affected. They offered to have a monitoring service watch for any suspicious activity for either one or two years at no charge to me. After having read your OP I think I'll take them up on it. Thanks for the heads up.

(10,779 posts)Honestly, pretty much all of your info, if you ever gave it to anyone and it was entered into a database somewhere, is/will be available.

(9,608 posts)And its getting worse.
I would like to see senate and congress candidates screaming that the do nothing congress and senate opening dumb fuck investigations into political opponents need to end wasting time and dollars on that and start a war in cyber theft.
Do some damn work for the people. Protect our ID from tech terrorism.
I have not heard a single promise to go to war against this growing life destroying criminal act, if elected. I think this would benefit Dems tremendously, to make this promise loud and out front.

(12,692 posts)Bfd a yr of monitoring. They made it sound like all americans are now victims. And there should be stiff penalties. Instead of paying 22 million ransom, hire an army of the best and bightest to keep on top of this threat.

(3,517 posts)I have found them to be very nice and helpful and I think they will call you back to save your place in line if they are backed up.
I froze dad's and mine. Noone can open an account or use for any reason. Peace of mind
