marble . However, when I was a kid we called them marbles and they were not made from marble.So what gives.

What does that have to do with marbles ?? You don't think you are going to put marbles in your car, These are toys.

The marbles are in the Mason Jar in the kitchen. Makes me ponder why it wasn't called a Steven Jar or a Claire Jar?

That one is easy: Named after John Mason (a tinsmith) who invented them for canning.

Oh cat's eyes. No these are regular marbles I have in a mason jar. Who I guess was named after a person named Mason.

It would last longer being made from marble. But then you'd have to keep it polished.

Marbles today are typically made of glass but in the past were made of many different materials. The earliest recorded marbles were made from stone and clay; the introduction of glass allowed colour to be added. Egyptian marbles, made over 2000 years ago of real marble and of glass, can be found in the British Museum.
