Saw something reassuring.

So I was coming home and saw this gopher turtle trying to cross a four lane highway divided by a median. I took a chance and turned right first chance I had and came up a side street for a large development. In front of me, parked on the side of the street, was an Amazon truck and the Amazon driver had hopped out of his truck and was headed down the hill towards the turtle. I was going to stop and get out to root him on, but it occurred to me that the driver left his truck unattended with no sight line to his vehicle so the fact that a car stopped by his truck would make his nervous.

So, I zig-zagged around the area to come around and by the time I made it back to the are, the turtle, driver and truck were gone. My guess is that the driver figured on the next step. If he had walked the turtle across four lanes of highway and the median, the turtle would have had a very narrow strip of hilly ground before it would have encountered more cemented commercial area and another large residential area. So I'm guessing driver took the turtle to a more hospitable area.

And before anyone gets all preachy about the homing abilities of gopher turtle, let me tell you that even people in the rescue business support the practice of transferring the turtles in area that are about to get developed.

And, in the area where I live, I have seen their habitats destroyed, to the point that where there were three active gopher turtle holes that I would regularly see on my walks, now there are none.

I did see one, not too long ago, same one that I saw twice. Poor thing. Took two weeks to make it past a residential community, looking for a place to dig in for the Winter.
