my hatred for decaffeinated coffee makes me laugh at myself

it is ultimately such an inconsequential thing to feel so intensely about,
but I do and it cracks me up. It's great.
I'd rather have no coffee at all than decaf.
If hell was a flavor,
it would be decaffeinated coffee by your second or third cup

So it's decaf or no coffee--something that I can't live without! I will say that there's nothing like freshly ground caffeinated coffee--the smell is heavenly!

so I went on a desperate bender of trying different decafs and substitutes.
Nothing passed muster as a long term solution for me.
Then it turned out my symptoms were due to something else

It's nearly 99.7% free of caffeine. I load it up with flavored creamer and it's passable. I can't drink alcohol either, so I can't even console myself with Bailey's or Buffalo Trace Bourbon Cream in my decaf. I have tried several nonalcoholic beverages and the only one I can stand is nonalcoholic Guinness. So that's what I have when we go to a pub. Getting old sucks!

I also enjoy Tasters decaf w/smidge of honey. Allow myself 2 cups with the french roast. Then my liver said no more brewskis, so Bud Zero has to do. Now to just stop smoking. If the orange traitor comes for my Army dis. that takes care of that. Been vegetarian for years now & feel much better despite the age thing. Better than the alternative!

the coffee desperately misses its caffeine so much
that it sucks the life out of you to compensate.

Even if you don't have a local roaster, you can get really good craft-roasted decaf beans online. I highly recommended that you experiment by growing locale (I.e., single origin beans) rather than cutesy blend names. E.g., try coffees from African plantations, Indonesian plantations, Central and South American plantations. If you like dark, muscular coffee, try the dark roasted African beans. If you like complex but less muscular coffee, try Costa Rica or some other coffees from that area. Think of it as the same kind of experience as consuming craft beer or local winery wines.

I buy an Indian coffee bean from Coffee Bean Direct online (2.5 lbs is about $40), and the other beans I like from a local roaster. Really good decaf beans could improve your experience.

PS. Don't pre-grind the beans either. Get a dependable grinder and grind right before you make your coffee. You don't have to spend a ton of money on a grinder. I have a Meuller blade grinder that was about $35, and if I bump-grind the beans, it minimizes the damage a blade grinder can do.

The only reason I go to bed at night is to get to the morning coffee. Good decaf beans could seriously make for a better experience. And once you experiment with craft roasted beans, grocery store coffees start to taste like the floor sweepings they are.

I remain open that there may be an acceptable decaf out there somewhere,
I no longer need one (knock wood) though.

I decided to quit caffeine 5 or 6 years ago, but love coffee and lots of it, so i switched to decaf. Last year at my yearly physical my doctor was curious to why my bad cholesterol was rising. Got reading and found that decaf coffee can raise your bad cholesterol by as much as 10%. That's all I needed to switch back to regular. Looking forward to my blood work and see if it has changed.
