Post your favorite recording artist or band from outside those of your generation

That is, what you consider your generation for purpose of this music survey.

I share Bob Seger's opinion, assuredly without any offense toward yours.

just take those old records off the shelf
I'll sit and listen to them by myself
today's music ain't got the same soul
I like that old time rock & roll

I'm 62 . . . my music is primarily from the '70s, with some '60s. My favorites from outside my generation are The Cranberries, the B-52s, and Paula Cole. I also really dig Peter Gabriel, but I think it's a reach to call him "outside my generation." And literally - he's only 13 years older than I am.

Tell us - what is your favorite music from outside your generation? And, if you like, the music you dig from within your generation.

Dylan, Doors, folk, etc., and especially Ray Charles. When we got our first TV, I was five years old and Bandstand was just about the only thing on. I developed a real taste for rock ‘n’ roll. Later, living in New York, after hearing Miles Davis live. I started to love jazz.. My favorite artists from outside my generation would be Louis Armstrong and Ella Fitzgerald. There are so many others, though and young ones as well

I have a brother 14 years older than me, so I was always listening to his records: The Who, Beatles, Yes, Zappa. I still love all that stuff, but the Punk/New Wave thing happened while I was a teenager, so I also love things like The Ramones, The Clash, The Jam, and Wire. But most of the younger people I listen to are in the extreme Metal genres, probably because that kind of music didn’t exist when I was young. I mean, if I hear a band that reminds me of Gang of Four or Wire I’ll like them but I won’t get TOO excited, since I’ve been listening to to those bands for decades. But we didn’t have bands that sound like Full of Hell when I was 18.

Called Foxes in the Snow, came out like 10 days ago. Roughly 85% of what he does is pure greatness, and none of it is bad. Same applies to this new one.

I'm pushing 60 but I've always kept up with current music so I don't consider a song that came out yesterday to be 'outside my generation', only the stuff that came before I was born If I were to pick some favorite artists who came out after I turned (arbitrarily) 27, I'd say Radiohead, Wilco, Spoon, Jason Isbell, Muse, and Ryan Adams (dickhead tho he is). Edit: Also Justin Townes Earle

Also if you're 62 you were 17 or 18 when the B-52's came out. Really not outside your generation .

(born in 1951… not a fan in general of today’s music, although I do like Taylor Swift okay) that I genuinely enjoy and listen to when I listen to popular music is Darius Rucker. But typically if I am listening to music, which is kind of rare, I tend toward classical piano stuff. Or I dip way back and listen to Judy Garland and Frank and the like. But even that’s not often—maybe if I am doing something tedious like a big cleaning job or cooking something that takes forever to prepare so I need background distraction.

Ethel Waters, Ella Fitzgerald, Billie Holiday, Dean Martin, Frank Sinatra, Doris Day, Nat King Cole, Judy Garland - singing the wonderful standards.

I like the Big Bands - Glenn Miller, Duke Ellington, Benny Goodman etc.

Love Cole Porter, Irving Berlin, George Gershwin, Rodgers and Hart, Jerome Kern and the singers who brought them to life - Fred Astaire, Ethel Merman, Ginger Rogers, Gene Kelly.

The musicals of the 30's and 40's - Babes in Arms, Pal Joey, Showboat, Girl Crazy et al .

from my generation- The Who, The Beatles.

Bruce and Patti are in the above age range but emerged later on. Bruce hit it big w Born to Run, around the Punk CBGB's time, and Patti's considered the "Godmother" of Punk since she first started out as a poet, then had Lenny Kaye accompanying her, finally the full Patti Smith Group.
