Here's a moose among some birch trees. A young male and another female were on the other side of the trail, but I couldn't get a good shot because they were behind the trees.
This is the Tony Knowles Coastal Trail where we walk our dog. It's about a mile from where I live.
This is Eklutna Lake on a foggy morning.
For some reason, they call this Reflections Lake. This and Eklutna Lake are just north of Anchorage a little bit.
And here is a great sunset from a few nights ago. This is the Campbell Creek Estuary, one of Anchorage's newest parks. For the sake of the wildlife, it's to be seen but not walked upon, so they have built observation decks above the estuary and don't allow dogs anywhere in the park.

(7,720 posts)acres about 40 miles south of Hibbing (I'm assuming you're from Hibbing). While I have not seen a moose on our property, our neighbor has. I have seen bear and wolves.

(9,480 posts)I've been there a few times but my wife and daughter have not. We're looking at taking the train to Denali and then to Seward for a boat tour of Kenai Fjords NP.

We're taking the train up to Fairbanks in February for aurora-viewing and to catch some of the arriving dog teams from the Yukon Quest sled dog race. We'll rent a car when we get there. We've been out to Nome for the Iditarod finish the last five years, so this year we wanted to do something different. Then we'll just fly home. My husband is really thrilled about the prospect of not having to drive 350 miles to Fairbanks in the dead of winter as we've done before a few times. One year we drove up there on the Richardson Highway in February, and I swear we didn't see a car for at least 75 miles. We were starting to wonder if the road was closed ahead, but we finally made it to Delta Junction and at least a little bit of civilization.

(23,156 posts)Alaska is one of the few states I've never been to. Someday. . . .
Meanwhile, I love scenery of all sorts. A couple of days ago I drove from Red River, NM to Eagle Lake, also NM on highway 38. Not a very long drive and some of the very most spectacular scenery I've ever seen. Didn't have a camera, so no pictures. But I am so glad when someone like you posts pictures.

(7,720 posts)my family drove to Alaska in a motorhome. The AlCan Highway still had 1,200 miles that was not paved. We had friends who lived in Anchorage. I don't remember too many details, but I do remember we drove to Fairbanks and North Pole and camped on the shores of a lake somewhere north of Fairbanks. (We were using a tent at that time.)
What I do remember is that it never seemed to get dark. We were there in June.
I recently found the dozens of slides (photos) that my father took with his ancient Argus 35mm camera. I'll have to dig out a slide projector. Maybe I'll buy one of those machines that digitize slides. I know my brothers would be excited to see the photos.

(1,965 posts)Thanks for posting. A visit to Alaska is on my bucket list. I'm just going to skip Wasilla.

(46,436 posts)It's a shame what happened to Wasilla. When I first came up here 40 years ago, it was kind of a cute little rural town. Now it's just urban sprawl. There are some good people out there, but a lot of right-wing crazies, too. If you go north of Anchorage, I would recommend instead taking the route through Palmer, which has stayed true to its agricultural roots.
Unfortunately, if you're going to Denali NP you almost have to go through Wasilla unless you want to add lots of miles on a dirt road to your trip.

(46,436 posts)I first came here as a visitor, too. My mom and dad moved up here in 1969 when my dad retired from NASA. I came up to visit in 1972, then 1973, and by 1975, here I was at age 29. Now I can't imagine living anywhere else.
Even knowing that I'll probably never even scratch the surface of what's out there to see, it's just so comforting to me to know that there's all that wild land out there where the trees can grow and the animals can run free, no fences, no borders. It just makes me happy.
