(10,000 posts)They equate silence with weakness. Consider the example of the Swift Boat Veterans. Kerry's advisors told him to not dignify the charges with a response. That made him appear week and slow to respond in the MSM.
My view is that we need to know what they are saying so that we can respond. JMHO, YMMV.

(9,933 posts)I've just lost my desire to attempt to reason with them after years of trying to counter the nuttiness from my own east coast family. Please don't let my cynicism get you down. It is important to know what they are saying and counter it loudly.

(18,219 posts)The only reason that I make a point to know what they are saying, and to respond to it, is that there are so many other people who see these kinds of things. They are moderate, they don't pay a lot of attention to politics, and they can be swayed by these posts if they hear nothing to counter them......and that is why I will not give up. I do not argue with the wingnut. I put my best argument out there, and walk away from it when the attacks start. Let the reasonable people decide who makes more sense, the rational argument or the ravings.

(18,219 posts)We will not change their minds---what little there is. We often spend way too much time debating them, and we exhaust ourselves. Exhausted and nothing gained.
I know so many people who are moderates, and even more who wouldn't know liberal from conservative because they have no interest in it. But these people do get those emails, and they do see this shit on FB, and if we are silent, they will believe this tripe. But when we engage in a long, drawn-out argument that gets nastier on both sides, they could see us as just as unreasonable. I realize that some people entertain themselves with these debates, but if it is happening in a public location, we should be aware that all those other people are also watching.
You made a good point with Kerry and the advise that he shouldn't even pay attention to the Swift Boating, since the charges were so ridiculous. We can't look weak and we can't let them throw this out as truth, because too many people seem willing to believe it. (I am still in shock over that one.)

(1 post)I personally Believe that Kerry will make a better Sec. Of State than Hillary. But I am certain the only reason he is even there is because of the fiasco. Hillary will not be there for 2016 this move is setting up Kerry for another run. I believe we are not too far from seeing a ticket with one republican and one democrat.

(10,000 posts)Second, while I wish that Kerry had won in '04, I can't see him running in '16 right on the heels of being Sec Stahe. JMHO, YMMV.
I think Benghazi notwithstanding, Hillary was a genius compared to Condi Rice. That said, Kerry will do an excellent job.
