I'm pretty happy with the result.

(12,904 posts)Thats really well done. I am certain that it is harder than it looks, and was wondering if having Conventional artistic ability would help with digital art ability.

(63,645 posts)But I have not used it for a very long time. I am taking the course because I want to learn how to use the tools available to make digital art.

(53,410 posts)What program are you using?
I used to work with Photoshop but I havent kept up with the latest upgrades nor used different programs.
Your technique and details are very good. I like the way you used colors to depict the subtleties of skin tones and light and shadows. Your eye almost looks real with the reflections of light of the upper lashes. You give it depth with the shadow of the upper lid on the eyes surface.
You have a super thin line on the lower right ledge between the eyeball and the lower eyelid that shows up white to depict the natural layer of moisture on the eyeball. I would add a few specs to the left side and in the inner corner. Just a touch would do. Of course, its already done well now.
This is very nicely done and it shows you are an artist.

(63,645 posts)...but in this case I was following the direction of the instructor.
The technical work is entirely my own, but i was following detailed instructions.
I am using photoshop 2020.

(53,410 posts)of painting and depicting objects correctly is pretty essential so you can then use them as a foundation in which you can break those rules.
Being taught the rules and the how tos in art is important just like being taught the alphabet can lead to great works of literature.

(18,618 posts)Did you paint traditionally. Before taking on the digital challenge?
Skinner

(10,492 posts)If you are interested, my late uncle left us a ton of digital paintings and sketches he did over the years on a website. Lifetime, hardcore Dem from Bay Area. I can provide a DM with link to you if you'd like to view for ideas and color, etc. Pics from places he visited all over the world. Some are amazing.

(18,160 posts)Even w instructions you still have to have the very good plus hand, eye coordination! Very well done!!
Were you sketching directly onto the tablet screen w stylus? Or like a Wacom table w stylus to the side while looking at the computer monitor?
I guess I considered myself an artist by the time I was twelve (67 now). So I grew up (and parents supported my efforts) trying various traditional mediums. Had art in Grade, JHS, went to Art HS and Art College.
Was a Graphic Design w paste ups & mechanicals the old fashion way. Occasionally illustration. Some fine art. Small abstract sculpture semi-career in the mid '80s. First saw computer art in mid-late 80's. Found a whole lotta stuff at a sub-convention at a big Photo Convention in ?93. Photoshop ? 2.5, Aldus something 2.0 etc
But the most exciting thing was then called FRACTAL Design- which was seriously imitating various real traditional mediums. I fell in love!
Unfortunately things went sideways for me a while later. Was able to start trying stuff out first at library the Draw portion of Word. Later Photoshop, and I found that FD had gone through various owners and names!
It still exists today as (I think) Corel Painter which I got to try for several years .
I've had some draw/paint programs on my tablet but need a new one - screen cracked. Useable but not for serious digital art. With stimulus check a new table and a stylus for direct screen drawing!
In the meantime I bought Infinite Painter dedicated cellphone digital art. Love it but ya know fingers are "bulky" in this realm. So if course I do a lot zooming to work.
Oh, and yes, I did do a digital eye as I'd already done them in traditional mediums.
I still draw w traditional and modern drawing instruments. Hope to do some acrylic painting again, too.
Yeah, I'm a chatty one.

(63,645 posts)Looks like this:
Im finding it rather difficult to use, but Im slowly getting the hang of it.
Still I might upgrade to the entry-level version with a built-in screen. That seems like it would be easier to use.
