John Carter flop to cost Walt Disney $200m (BBC)

Walt Disney has said it expects to lose $200m (£126m) on its movie John Carter, making it one of the biggest flops in cinema history.

The film, about a military captain transported to Mars, could result in an $80-120m loss for Disney's movie business during the current quarter.

Disney shares were down almost 1% in early trading in New York.

The firm is still likely to make a substantial quarterly profit, though, thanks to its TV businesses.

It is estimated that John Carter cost $250m to make and it is likely that Disney spent another $100m on marketing.

...and maybe put it on HBO or Showtime instead.

I know them books look thin, but it's a rich story.

They coulda stretched it out over a couple or three or four TV seasons, grew their audience, made something special.

Instead, they made it a 3D Disney movie.

3D fans hated it. Disney fans hated it. Burroughs fans (like me) hated it.

From Mr Kermode's review: "It's a film whose narrative does not make any sense to people who have not read all the books. And people who have read the books, they'll just be going 'Why are you doing this to those books?'"

I couldn't agree more.

Somebody greenlighted this project. But based on what? Whodafuck knows.
