Westfront 1918 (1930) Criterion

Marta got this for me for Christmas. We watched it today. Once you get past the opening scenes it is a good film. Keep in mind it is 90 years old. It has some nice extras.

1. This looks amazing.

The Nazis destroyed so much that can never be repaired. Just one example was German moviemaking, which in the 1920s rivaled Hollywood, French and British cinema. Once Hitler came to power the cream of German culture--those who were fortunate enough to be able to do so--went into exile, many of them ending up in America.

Much of the cast of Casablanca were European actors who had to flee after 1933. And so much other talent behind the camera likewise ended up in America--Fritz Lang being just one example. But countless others were lost to the horror that swept Europe in the 1930s and '40s.

I'll have to add this to my list of must sees.
