And one of my favorite John Prine songs is "The Late John Garfield Blues."

Sample verse:

"Midnight fell on Franklin Street
and the streetlamp bulbs were broke
for the life of me I could not see
but i heard a brand new joke:
Two men were standing upon a bridge
one jumped and screamed 'You lose!"
And just left the odd man holding
Those late John Garfield Blues."

He'd survived cancer, but Covid took him out.

The song is on his second album, "Diamonds in the Rough."

Steve Goodman plays lead acoustic guitar, and David Grissman plays mandolin.

It also has one of Prine's best antiwar songs on it: "Take the Star Out of the Window."

The chorus:

"So it's hello California,
Hello dad and mom.
Ship ahoy your baby boy
is home from Vietnam.
Don't ask me any questions
about the medals on my chest.
Take the star out of the window
and let my conscience take a rest."

My big brother, who was a Vietnam vet., loved that song.

It was about how everyone feels late on a sad Sunday night when there's nothing on TV but an old John Garfield movie.

But I'm not sad late on a Sunday night when the Late John Garfield is on TV. I'm always happy to see him.

evoking that kind of feeling.

"I'm going away to the Last Resort
in a week or two real soon,
where the fish don't bite
but once a night
by the pale light of the moon.
The horses scream
the nightmare's dream
and the dead men all wear shoes
'coz everybody's dancing
those late John Garfield Blues."

Sent chills down my spine the first time I heard it.
