Biggest hurdle I had was believing Charlton Heston in the role of Vargas. But get past that and ... WOW!
I think Orson Welles and Russell Metty (DP) stole some angles from John Huston's The Maltese Falcon, especially the way Welles' girth filled up the screen as menacingly as Sidney Greenstreet's. If there was a director that employed this trick prior to 1941, I'm all ears.

Also, I remember the show from which Lester Maddox walked out because Dick would not apologize for a remark he made characterizing Maddox's constituents. In addition I remember Dick's contentious exchange with Norman Mailer. The Barry Goldwater show comes to my mind as well.
