After several tries I finally got through "Touch of Evil."

Biggest hurdle I had was believing Charlton Heston in the role of Vargas. But get past that and ... WOW!

I think Orson Welles and Russell Metty (DP) stole some angles from John Huston's The Maltese Falcon, especially the way Welles' girth filled up the screen as menacingly as Sidney Greenstreet's. If there was a director that employed this trick prior to 1941, I'm all ears.

3. Once he said, "I've had shows with three guests, two guests, one guest, but never before with zero."

His sole guest that night was Zero Mostel.

Also, I remember the show from which Lester Maddox walked out because Dick would not apologize for a remark he made characterizing Maddox's constituents. In addition I remember Dick's contentious exchange with Norman Mailer. The Barry Goldwater show comes to my mind as well.
