Haydn's 'Trumpet Concerto'

1. After 12 years of playing trumpet in school I can read the music and

I would say that I could probably play the piece after a long amount of practice. However, the few times when I played solos and then had to work with an accompanying instrument it always felt weird, as though I didn't learn the music correctly when rehearsing by myself.

When I was in high school I played a solo for contest my junior year and it felt shaky since I only rehearsed with the piano player for about an hour. The two young ladies that were piano players in my high school graduated so I chose not to do a solo my senior year. However, the band director put together a trumpet quartet without arranging for us to have a piano player. The first time that we played with the accompanist was before the judge and it was a disaster since she was sightreading the music. I left the room feeling embarrassed and cursing the band director under my breath for doing that to us since the four of us put in a lot of work during our rehearsals.

As far as the Haydn piece is concerned, there are some significant jumps over an octave that would be difficult to hit each time so I do believe that the piece would be slightly easier on the E♭ trumpet than B♭ trumpet.

5. No, I don't play anymore.

The last time that I played a trumpet was about 30 years ago when my high school invited the alums to join the regular band at a Homecoming ceremony so we were given matching T-shirts and marched in with the drum line prior to the game. When I was in high school our football team was terrible (they only scored a total of 39 points during a ten game season), so we definitely got a workout that night when the team scored over 50 points. The alums played the fight song ("On Wisconsin&quot without the students just before halftime when the football team scored and the students were getting ready for their show.

I will say that was a fun band director who had a great band--they advanced to the state concert contest in the spring and received a 1, 1, 2 from the judges. The judge that gave the band a 2 was a trombone player and that band used valve trombones instead of sliding trombones so he had a grievance. One other thing I liked about the band director was he poked some fun at the backwards rural life by selecting the "Theme to Green Acres" as the halftime musical piece.

By the way, I have played a little bit of baritone before since it is similar to playing the trumpet. I could actually hit the upper register notes better than those who played the instrument all of the time.
