So happy with my latest project

I live 1,000 miles away from the rest of my family. When my older daughter visited for Thanksgiving, she asked me to make her something - a plaid 50s-style shirt-dress. I found a pattern: McCalls 6891, A Palmer/Pletsch pattern which includes lots of fitting advice and has you do a pin-fitting of the tissue.
My daughter is petite but has a great shape, due mainly to her yoga and various acrobatic and dance groups she practices with. We made some adjustments to the basic pattern, and bought some really pretty Buffalo check cotton flannel in red, black and gray. My plan was to baste the dress together and send it to her for trying on...but what with the heavy mail this time of year, I decided to just complete it and mail it to her.
IT FITS...and she loves it. Can't tell you how happy I am that this worked out!

...and oh what benefits!
You can have whatever you want. And fitting? You can make things to fit and flatter your body, as opposed to what looks good on a hanger. It makes all the difference.
I consider myself very lucky to have had a mother who sewed beautifully. She got me started with dresses for my Barbie when I was eleven, and I was off and running. I make clothes, quilts, purses, and even stuff like curtains and pillows.
Just the best hobby ever.

I think the reason I don't sew is because my mother did!! I remember her trying to teach me when I was a little girl of about seven or so. She had me hemming dishtowels. No matter how hard I tried, the hems were never straight enough, and she had me ripping them out, and doing them over and over and over . . . I'm sure she thought that was the right way to make me better at sewing, but it was the wrong approach with me!

I am a perfectionist knitter. Not surprisingly, that was the handicraft my mother LEAST liked!

I have been on a lace-knitting kick lately. I have a couple of pretty shawls knit, and after they are blocked and ready to go, I will post some pictures.

I'm struggling with the basics, setting sleeves, nice looking button holes, etc.

with the plaid!!!

I was never very good matching up plaid.

Especially on the parts that aren't straight cut.

Anyway, it's colorful but not overpowering
