The "medical' insurance industry is enormous. Think of all the employees, facilities, and overlapping services that would have significant changes. The fight against interruption or modification of employment, scares most of these personnel. The CEOs might have to surrender significant compensation too.
Too many people have anxiety about the status of their health care costs. My physician friends in other industrialized countries tell me that their patients receive excellent care, are pleased with their health care policies, and don't fear bankruptcy from worries about the cost of medical care.
Medicare, for instance, is a working model of a single payor format, with some additional choices. Seniors and others with disabilities still have some financial concerns, but not near the levels of those not in this 'program'. Some of my physician friends disagree,,,just as some or many of our family and friends disagree about this current political craziness.
I would vote for a single payor system. BUT... would segue with it being an available option to see how it affects overall health, both physical and mental.
I, personally, would not have a problem with the single payor format. Hours are spent daily taxing the medical staff with time and burdensome formalities which provide no real improvement to the well-being of you, me.....us, any/all of us.
Guess what? Most medical professionals have their patients' health and well-being first and foremost on their minds, but, it is taking a toll on both their families and them. Have you noticed that your doctor spends less time looking you in the eye and listening to you? Health care providers are tired of this fight. Many are retiring earlier. Many are modifying their practice models just to save their sanity.
I don't consider myself a socialist, but see this as a productive stabilizer of the harrowing decline of affordable, jumbled, confusing, and frightening status quo. We do have some "social" programs all around us that do work: Police, fire, military, highways, nutrition assistance, etc...I am one who believes health care is a right and will vote for a well received program that helps us all.
