Pomus reportedly wrote it at his own wedding reception, watching his bride dance with other men all evening. He would never dance with her - he was in a wheelchair from childhood polio.

because he had polio and couldn't dance. His girlfriend loved to dance and would have several dance partners throughout the evening, but she always went home with Doc. He wrote "Boogie Woogie Country Girl for his favorite singer Big Joe Turner. He took the name Doc Pomus because he would frequently perform with black artists. His parents disapproved of race mixing and told him he couldn't use the family name on marquees.
His brother was famed NYC divorce lawyer Raoul Felder.
