All 4 of us were good players, so it would probably be passable for a lot of bands after the 2nd playing.
But, we cared a lot about harmonies, and I'm a freak about tight.
Until I heard those 2 millisecond periods of dead silence before a chord change, I wasn't happy.
Probably play it twice. Do another new one twice. Do a few just to get in a groove again, then repeat.
After 3 Tuesdays, we had played it 12 times, and unless it was a really complicated piece, it was ready.
We only had Tuesdays because we played 40-45 weekends each year, so one 90 minute practice per week was all we could muster. Plus, we never played in January, so we might do 2x per week then & churn the song list with 10 new songs, including original material.
But, nobody ever came to a rehearsal unprepared. So, that helped.
Doing a song once & winging it was for jam nights. Or, our "back pocket" list which were songs we just did without ever rehearsing them, just to see what would happen. We had 15-20 of those. Broke up the monotony of 2 nighters, where the same song list in the same order 2 nights in a row could get boring.
