(17,800 posts)still long to be in my beloved hometown of Spencerport on the Erie Canal. What a great place to be a kid.

(17,800 posts)Spencerport's not in it, but Rochester, Albany, Buffalo, Syracuse, Rome, and other familiar towns are. There's plenty of drinking, fighting, romance, singing, and canal life. It really shows how the canal was a center of life for the communities located on it. It gives an entertaining glimpse of what Spencerport canal life could have been like. The movie takes place around 1850. Since it's an older movie, it really looks like it was filmed "back then."
I watched it on Amazon Prime. It's also available on YouTube.

(2,960 posts)I stopped at the Erie Canal Heritage Park off I-90 eastbound last week. Very cool. They are going to be bringing an old 80-foot barge to be cradled in the dry lock in front of the restored Erie Hotel next year as part of the 200th anniversary celebrations. Getting it there will be a massive challenge, and what a cool display it will be.
