I think it's in Peter Garalnick's biography of Elvis: Last Train to Memphis.

Elvis had received all kinds of grief from bluegrass purists about how he'd "desecrated" this classic, this in the immediate aftermath of the record coming out and before Elvis became a national phenom.

After a gig Elvis heard that Monroe wanted to come back stage to meet him.

Elvis was all worried that he was about to get chewed out by one of his heroes.

Instead, Monroe told him how much he loved his cover, and told him to "pay no mind" to the critics.

Bill Monroe was a classic. His music will live as long as people have ears.

Elvis too.
