Creedence Clearwater Revival's John Fogerty wins music rights

Following a 50-year legal battle, the founding member of Creedence Clearwater Revival now owns the global publishing rights to the iconic rock band's songs.

It came after Mr Fogerty, 77, bought a majority stake in the rights to the band's catalogue from Concord Records, which has owned the rights since 2004.

"As of January this year, I own my own songs again," he wrote on Twitter.

"This is something I thought would never be a possibility. After 50 years, I am finally reunited with my songs."

Congrats to John Fogerty! This happens all too often to song writers and musicians and is not fair. CCR is one of my favorite bands and Fogerty a favorite singer.

2. Wouldn't it be accurate to say he lost the 50-year legal battle?

The courts seemingly didn't award him anything, he had to buy out the opposing claim (for an undisclosed sum).

For him, it's a win because he now has legal ownership of his own property.
I agree it's not a financial win, because 50 years of past residuals are never going to be his.
From an ownership perspective though, it's probably a big win for him.
Remember, this is a guy who got sued for writing a song that sounded too much like himself.
What I do wonder though is whether this is the end of Credence Clearwater Revisited. That was Doug's and Stu's project of playing those hits they were originally on.
Fogarty sued them over the music & name, but lost because he didn't have rights to the songs and the record company owned the name.
He owns the songs now.
