(152,070 posts)Having the camera and lens that I now have makes this sort of photo within my reach. Good equipment makes all the difference!
I was so happy to see the clear sky all day, and into the night.

(1,961 posts)And because of your pic, I took my binoculars out to the backyard just now to take a look (because I couldn't keep them steady, yours is a better representation). And for anyone taking a look, the bright light at a 290 or so degree angle (go left, go up) is Venus, and if you keep going in the same direction you will see a fainter, red-colored light, which is Mars.
Cool!

(152,070 posts)I too receive EarthSky.org every day, and I saw this same picture. I saw Venus tonight, but she was too far away to capture. And the crescent moon would have been way too small anyhow.
Anyway, I'm glad I inspired you to have a look at your sky too. Binoculars are supposed to work well at this sort of thing, though I do hear you about holding them steady!

(1,961 posts)When I was 10 or so, my parents bought me a nighttime map of the sky, which glowed in the dark. I had to 'charge' it by putting it under a lamp, and I would then take it outside and try to ID the constellations.
One time I took a picture of the moon (back in the days of film) and when I picked up the pictures, my moon picture wasn't included, as they thought it was a mistake. I had them develop the negative and as I recall, it was actually quite good! At least according to my parents.
Thanks again, I find myself in these times looking back to 'simpler' times. I know, I know, but they sure seem that way.
