Hershey Theatre is a 1,904-seat theater in downtown Hershey, Pennsylvania. Touring Broadway musicals, concerts, community performances, and dance groups perform at the theater. Architect C. Emlen Urban began planning the building of the theater as a community center in 1915 for chocolate magnate and philanthropist Milton S. Hershey. Hershey began construction of the theater in 1929 during the Great Depression. The theater was opened in September 1933 as part of Hershey's Great Building Campaign of the Depression. At its opening, the theater was also used as a movie theater, and the original projectors are still used for classic screenings. The lobby of the theater is inspired by St. Mark's Cathedral in Venice. Its "canopy of gold" and pin-point mosaic took German artisans two years to complete. The theater itself is inspired by Byzantine and Venetian themes.

(13,394 posts)Theaters in the '20's (those 20's, not 2020's) were frequently highly ornamental. Loews and Stanley in Jersey City are works of art.

(4,609 posts)The only seats I found bad were in the balcony for Chicago. Miserably uncomfortable with no legroom. After that experience we decided if we couldnt be closer we werent going.
You captured the beauty with your photographs. Thanks for sharing.

(36,332 posts)My ex used to teach fifth grade science at the Hershey School. I think it had the third highest endowment in the country at the time, behind Harvard and Yale. The joke used to be that they didn't have custodians-- when the floor got dirty they just built a new building, lol.
