Just had this bird fly accross my face and land on the lamp in my office. So I want to share with you folks. The Skippa was quite taken with this, as he was with the bird that visited last night. Got to get my screens up....

(5,138 posts)I've often heard a Luna's approaching; drawn to my lantern's light in the forest. They crash into trees with their broad wings and thrash on the ground before taking wing again. It's easy to mistake their crashing and thrashing for something much larger. Other large moths like the Polyphemus and Io don't seem to have as much trouble navigating the forest. Lunas are beautifully clumsy. The adults don't live long (maybe a week?) and this fine specimen appears to be at the end of its days.
That looks like the interior of the log house I owned for many years. The logs are the same style but my tongue-and-groove walls were oriented horizontally.
Nice photo, OAITW r.2.0!
The title is a play on the name of a certain album by you know who.

(84,310 posts)A flying work of art. And look at those wonderful antennae. Like the most delicate ferns. That's how you know it's a moth and not a butterfly. Butterflies have long thin slender ones that look like what a car has.
