Here are some recent photos of insects. It's been a little while since I've posted any of these. I've been working on some new ones, along with reshooting and editing most of the old ones as I get better at them.
Clicking on these images will take you to my Smugmug page where you can view the full resolution files, which I recommend you do if you're a fan of sharp macrophotographic detail. These images were all photographed with a Nikon 40mm macro lens on a WeMacro indexing focus rail. All are focus stacked from several hundred individual images.
This first photo is a new (to me) fulgorid plant hopper, Cathedra serrata from Ecuador, commonly called the sawtoothed plant hopper. Definitely check out the fine detail on this specimen (click it twice):
The next three images are all beetles. The first is Ceroglossus chilensis (cyanicollis), the Chilean magnificent beetle. This specimen was challenging for several reasons, but the result is indeed magnificent with black, red, and blue iridescence:
This chonkster is Mouhotia gloriosa (planipennis), the glorious ground beetle from Southeast Asia:
Finally, this is a male Neptunides stanleyi, (=Taurhina stanleyi), a scarab beetle from Uganda. These beetles are mostly shining green, but the studio lights brought out the red-brown colors seen here:
I hope you enjoyed them! Now I'm off to the dentist!
