(25,595 posts)Between the USFS and the staffer's needs/wants/desires, the sky is the limit. My lookouts are usually over the top (pardon the pun).
I have plenty of battery electrical power to run all my stuff .. off my own solar panels. The USFS stuff is off their solar panels.
Due to rain all day today, I'm running the USFS generator this evening to charge my batteries and the government batteries.
The heat and cooking are propane, provided by the USFS. And thank you, taxpayer, because I've had the heat cranked up all day!
The USFS radios are powered by their batteries; my ham radios by mine. Sometimes we overlap, but it is all for tghe common cause.
Etc., etc ..

(10,002 posts)I'm curious how you shot that - it looks like you're away from the structure of the tower. Selfie stick?

(25,595 posts)I like everything about this lookout, except the dangerous STEEPNESS of the steps. I'm an old man .. I'll just have to be careful!

(25,595 posts)I bought it in May, before I came out west for fire season (2700 mile trip). I got my FAA license before I even took it out of the box.
I screwed around and never flew it, thinking I'd have plenty of time out here. I have over 25,000 hours of flying time, so that made me a little arrogant about learning about drone flying.
So, on the lookout peak the wind is almost always too strong to practice flying. Finally, one day last week I got a short session without any photography. And early this morning I did this photo flight.
Good thing I did it early. The wind/rain/storms hit mid-morning, and it since then has not been fit for man nor beast!
