Rule of thirds applied. Main subject in upper left 1/3 of picture so the eye moves to the right (where the bird is going) and gathers context about where the bird is and what else is going on in the picture, then moves down and back to the bird.

Even though it’s a still, the perception of the viewer is already making the narrative as you suggested.

5. I am a wildlife photographer and...

When I shoot I take the entire image into account. Yes the focus is on the subject but I also want the "eye candy" in the photo to tell the whole story.
I will shoot in places that has fewer wildlife because the location is full of eye candy and avoid places without. It's the typical way I get the "different" shot.

10. It all depends on what is in the viewfinder.

The important thing is that having the main subject dead center is very static. The eye finds the subject and just stays there.

Don't forget the rule of rules; they are made to be broken. For the contest however the idea is apply this one to good effect.

Sort of. I'm recovering from a lower GI flu thing, lost at least 15lbs in 24 hours, still moving a little slow too. Glad to hear you got through it okay.
