(19,751 posts)My fathers aunt lived in Slidell when I was much younger. This photo reminds me of the old southern towns tucked away like where she lived. Very nice picture

(42,770 posts)I think you were lucky to live down there. I lived in French Quarter for 3 years and there's something so absolutely special about that part of the country and the people there. I worked with people who had lost their hones, right after Katrina, and were dealing with all kinds of insurance and contractor issues. There's a special spirit there and I understand after a thousand people that washed out to sea!
Wish LA got more federal $ to protect the wetlands. So much more important (to me) than a third loop around Houston

(39,874 posts)A few years before Katrina. Our home in Slidell took on eight feet of water. Just a few miles north of Lake Pontchartrain.
We had a blast down there. I think were too old for that lifestyle now.

(42,770 posts)But I lived one block from Bourbon, on Royal and you can actually avoid it all the time . Lol
Besides the people, I miss that there are no rules. ( except hard to turn left . I think it's interesting to think about rules for living. I'm in Connecticut now among like minded people which is great, but there are so many rules, I think to protect everyone from everything. Hard to get used to. Afraid I'll go to recycling jail very soon
Imagine MS a lot like LA.

(39,874 posts)We lived 25 miles north of Slidell just across the state line. Cheap real estate was the draw. One thing we really enjoyed about Mississippi was the all you can eat catfish places out in the middle of nowhere. Out in the stirs. And the gulf coast was folksy with Bat St Louis, Pass Christian, Ocean Springs and other nice lil towns. But ya cant beat Boudreaux, Thibodoux and the coonasses for a good time.
