(36,587 posts)I was hesitant to post in this forum after seeing so many excellent photos.
It's a cicada and there were a lot of them here in 2017. I was lucky to catch this one during its transformation. They're called "jarflies" or "17 year locusts" in this area.

(36,587 posts)The time from the first shot I made, which was blurry and rushed, until the last shot above was just about 4 minutes. Edit: I keep screwing up the time. It was about 2 hours.

(36,587 posts)There were a great many of these appearing in a short amount of time, so my guess is some type that spends a long time in the ground. I've lived here for over 40 years and don't recall a big batch of light green ones before 2017. (Doesn't mean there weren't any; I may have just missed them before).
